Job Title: Fleet Mechanic
Department: Welding and Fabrication
Reports To: Site Foreman
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Revision Date: September 27, 2021
Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday; Day shift, but flexible to meet the needs of the organization and position.
SUMMARY
The Fleet Mechanic performs maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on cars, trucks, and other vehicles in the Company fleet in a safe, efficient, quality minded manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/MAJOR TASKS
1. Performing repair work on vehicles such as breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside repair in a safe, efficient, and quality manner, including:
• Performing operation test before repairs to manufacturer’s specifications, including engines, transmissions and clutches, suspension and steering, fuel and ignition (gas and diesel), electric systems, brakes, and HVAC systems;
• Following paper-flow procedures, including documenting correct mileage/hours, save and tag all warranty and core parts, document all repairs on work order using complaint, cause, and correction format, follow parts ordering procedures;
• Performing a final operational test on all vehicles to quality-check all repairs
• Ensuring that vehicles are clean and washed after the repair is completed.
2. Performing required inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize safety, productivity, and life of the unit, including:
• Perform or schedule DOT inspections;
• Perform preventative maintenance on trucks, including fluid changes, lubrications, safety inspections, and brake repairs;
• Perform preventative maintenance on trailers and off-road equipment including lubrication, adjustments, and safety inspections.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair trailers, lift equipment, and other off-road vehicles to maintain the safety and reliability of the unit, including:
3.Visually inspect the structural integrity of trailers, lift equipment, and other off-road equipment and report any deficiencies so they may be corrected;
• Perform preventative maintenance per manufacturer’s guidelines and promptly to maximize the life and productivity of the equipment
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Maintain accurate and current maintenance, inspection, registration, etc. records for all vehicles in Fleet;
2. Offers suggestions/methods to improve work processes and procedures;
3. Participates in required continuing professional education to maintain work-related certification, if relevant;
4. Maintains open communication channels to foster a harmonious work environment;
5. Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
a. Frequently works outdoors;
b. Noise level can be high at times.
QUALIFICATIONS / PREREQUISITES
1. COMMUNICATION
a. Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, managers, and co-workers using strong and understandable language skills in reading, written work, and comprehension.
2. SKILLS (Possess the following):
a. Knowledge of engines and controls, transmissions and controls, brakes and suspensions, and hydraulics;
b. Knowledge of various vehicles and equipment;
c. Skilled in diagnosis and repair of electrical systems on Fleet vehicles and equipment;
d. Knowledgeable of DOT Inspection requirements;
e. Ability to operate various pieces of equipment such as backhoes and trenchers;
3. EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE
1. 3-5 years of vehicle mechanic experience.
4. EDUCATION
1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Certification as an auto mechanic a plus
5. OTHER
Valid driver’s license / acceptable driving record.
