Congratulations to Todd Niemann on completing his service as chair of the American Welding Society D1 Committee on Structural Welding.

The D1 Committee writes the codes that govern structural steel welding across the country, and Todd’s leadership reflects the depth of expertise he brings every day in welding, structural bolting, and steel fabrication.

Our PNW offices wrapped up a week of bridge inspections on the West Marquam Bridges in Portland, Oregon! The project involved complex road closures, nighttime work, and coordination across multiple teams to safely and efficiently get the job done.

Despite the long nights and logistical challenges, morale stayed high thanks to great weather, an awesome crew, and some incredible views of Portland after dark.

A big thank you to ODOT and Consor Engineers for their support and coordination throughout the project.

Congratulations to Finn Hubbard on being recognized as an Instructor of Excellence by the Federal Highway Administration’s National Highway Institute!

Since 2007, the Instructors of Excellence Award has recognized those who demonstrate exceptional contributions to professional, learner-centric training. Awardees achieve NHI Instructor Certification, teach at least three NHI training sessions annually, maintain a satisfaction rating of 4.8/5.0 or higher on instructor evaluations, and earn endorsement from an NHI Training Program Manager.

This award recognizes instructors who consistently deliver high-quality training to transportation professionals. It reflects the care and commitment that go into helping participants understand technical material and apply it in their work. At Fickett Structural Solutions, sharing knowledge is an important part of supporting our profession and the safety of the infrastructure we serve. We’re proud to celebrate Finn and this recognition.

Our team has been busy in South Dakota this fall, supporting the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s (SDDOT) bridge inspection program.

Tom Hardinger, Brian Schmidt, and Ryan Sievers performed Quality Assurance (QA) inspections on both the state and local bridge systems. These inspections evaluate the effectiveness and consistency of previous inspections, helping identify opportunities to improve inspection procedures and training.

Todd Demski and Jordan Pollnow performed routine bridge inspections in the Aberdeen Region, documenting bridge conditions to support maintenance and repair planning.

Thank you to our team for their work in the field and to SDDOT for the continued opportunity to support its bridge inspection program.

Last week, we looked at Offense — How We Grow.

Growth matters only when we preserve what we have worked to create. That is the purpose of Defense — How We Protect.

And he does all of this while serving as Fickett's Drone Manager!

Throughout 2026, Fickett has been supporting TxDOT with Routine and NSTM Bridge Inspections, and SNBI updates. Our inspection teams have evaluated a wide range of structures, utilizing access methods that include wading, ladders, under-bridge inspection trucks (UBITs), bucket trucks, aerial lifts, and rope access techniques performed by our SPRAT-certified personnel.

In addition to inspection services, Fickett's Nondestructive Testing (NDT) staff have been supporting ultrasonic testing (UT) of historic truss bridges and pin-and-hanger systems throughout Texas.
