🧡 The History of LTP β€” Part 4

A press pad looks simple. It isn't.

It has to withstand heat, let steam reach the garment, support vacuum pull-down, cushion the fabric, and hold a consistent pressing surface β€” all at the same time. Jerome H. Cohen's work in the 1960s and '70s helped define the layered construction logic still behind quality press pads today: heat-resistant materials like Nomex, PTFE, glass cloth, felt, and silicone, combined with cushioning and steam flow.

That same functional tradition runs straight through our own pad families β€” Slick, Clean, Excel, Unique, and custom builds β€” each built for a different combination of surface, cushion, steam flow, and durability.

That wraps our 4-part series on where LTP comes from. Thanks for following along β€” the whole series is live on our blog now. Link in bio. πŸ™Œ

🧡 The History of LTP β€” Part 3

Before press pads and grid plates were the headline, Excelsior was solving the same heat-and-steam problem with iron shoes.

The "Burtest" name traces back to Excelsior's iron shoe business β€” Lou De Robertis has confirmed Burt Cohen's involvement. Jerome H. Cohen's earliest documented work dates to the 1960s with heat-resistant steam iron shoe technology, and the line continued into the 1970s with Antonio Abolafia's patented, Excelsior-assigned steam iron shoe.

Iron shoes, press pads, grid plates, insulating covers β€” different products, same lineage: heat resistance, steam performance, fabric protection.

🧡 The History of LTP β€” Part 2

Before there was LTP, there was Excelsior Belting Equipment Co. β€” a Brooklyn supplier to the dry cleaning, laundry, and garment pressing trade, tracing back to at least 1936.

Behind Excelsior's product line was Jerome H. Cohen, whose technical work helped shape heat-resistant pressing surfaces, iron shoes, press plates, and press pads. Lou De Robertis β€” later LTP's own president β€” got his start at Excelsior as head of sales, and became part of that invention record himself through insulation-cover development.

Even our name traces back to Excelsior: "Lab Test Products" comes directly from the Lab Test product line that existed within the company.

🧡 New series: The History of LTP β€” Part 1

Lab Test Products was formed in New Jersey in 2008. But the story starts decades earlier, in Brooklyn.

LTP grew out of Excelsior Belting Equipment Co., a company serving the dry cleaning and garment pressing trade since at least 1936. When Excelsior's Brooklyn chapter came to a close, Lou De Robertis and Peter Parisi carried the product knowledge, customer relationships, and manufacturing expertise forward into a new company in Middlesex, NJ β€” and even kept the name from Excelsior's existing Lab Test product line.

The location changed. The standards didn't.

Ask anyone who works in a dry cleaning or laundry operation and they'll tell you β€” summer on the pressing floor is no joke. Between the outdoor heat and the heat coming off the pressing machine, it can feel unbearable.
