🧵 The History of LTP — Part 5

Grid plates mount on the underside of the press head, and they’re one of the easiest parts of the machine to overlook. They’re also one of the most important.

During a press cycle, steam travels from the head through the grid plate and into the garment. Then vacuum pulls moisture back out through the pad on the buck so the fabric can dry and set. The grid plate is the surface that meets the garment from above, guiding the steam while it shapes the garment under pressure.

A poor grid plate shows up in the finish. The wrong fit for your machine makes it worse. LTP’s 490 Plus® and custom aluminum plates are built for specific heat, fabric, and machine requirements, because the right plate for a Unipress isn’t necessarily the right plate for a Forenta.

This week our sewing team finished a run of custom air bags for a steam tunnel. Every one is cut, sewn, zippered, and labeled by hand in our Middlesex, NJ shop.

What goes into them:

Heavy-duty blue coated nylon, built for heat and moisture
Oversized zippers for fast, easy access
Brass grommets for secure mounting
Reinforced, double-stitched seams

🧵 The History of LTP — Part 4

A press pad looks simple. It isn't.

It has to withstand heat, let steam reach the garment, support vacuum pull-down, cushion the fabric, and hold a consistent pressing surface — all at the same time. Jerome H. Cohen's work in the 1960s and '70s helped define the layered construction logic still behind quality press pads today: heat-resistant materials like Nomex, PTFE, glass cloth, felt, and silicone, combined with cushioning and steam flow.

That same functional tradition runs straight through our own pad families — Slick, Clean, Excel, Unique, and custom builds — each built for a different combination of surface, cushion, steam flow, and durability.
