Outback Engineering has exciting news. Landscape Architecture has now been added to the long list of design and consulting services that we offer our clients. It is the perfect complement to our multi-disciplinary approach to land planning and will allows us to serve you better. Gregory Drake, RLA, has been hired to manage and lead this division of the company. He has over 30 years of landscape design and construction experience. His focus of protecting and preserving the natural environment through ecologically sound design and low impact development will provide designs that meet the needs and desires of the client and fit into their setting.

Outback Engineering SWPPP Client Off Their Feet by Saving them Time and Money!

Outback recently performed surveys, site design, and permitting on a 9-acre site for a 32-unit condominium construction site. The design included detailed Erosion and Sediment Control Plans and provided infiltration systems to contain stormwater runoff onsite using temporary sediment traps and erosion control barriers during construction. Prior to commencing construction, we reviewed these ESC plans with the development team and site contractor and stressed the importance of adhering to these good housekeeping practices to ensure they maintain a clean and problem free site.

During a recent downpour, onsite soils eroded onto the paved road, but no sediment escaped offsite. The town’s engineering consultant observed the eroded soils onsite and recommended to the Town Planner that we prepare a SWPPP. We explained our position that a SWPPP was unnecessary in this case due to no offsite discharge to wetlands, and referred to the EPA’s CGP flowchart:

After the town’s consultant reviewed this further, they agreed with us that no SWPPP was required!

With this project, our precise site design practices and communication saved our client thousands of dollars in additional unnecessary regulation and oversight. We were told the town has similar sites that unnecessarily filed with EPA and prepared SWPPP’s, and they are now likely to rewrite some of their requirements.
