The villain in your story is whatever is causing your equipment to fail:

Did you know that it's illegal for someone to dictate where you buy from?

Quick story:

We'd been working with a power gen facility in Central America, when I finally got the chance to tour the facilities: I heard the dreaded 'whistling noise'.

All pumps within a large power unit were 'whistling'.

Under all the noise, I yelled to the maintenance manager:

CAVITATION!

"What??"

"How do you know?"

Remember our last post about suction strainers?

Bingo. Another one.

But the pumps were screaming at this facility.

There wasn't much to do.

Three weeks later, we get the call:

"Can you quote all 6 pumps?"

(4 in the power unit + 2 standby).

They were Parker pumps. We'd dealt enough with the local distributor, that we knew they weren't going to help.

So I contact a friend up North from the same company.

And shortly after send them a 5-fig PO.

We immediately get a call from corporate: you have to order from your local branch!

"No we don't"

"We choose where we buy from."

And we did.

They won't feel the pain.

"We were told our only option was to replace the pumps"

We were visiting a mine to commission two oil filtering and dehydration units for the turbine oil.

And upon connecting with the reliability manager, we noticed he had hydraulic schematics for the coal reclaimers sitting on his desk.

"Are you having any issues we can help with?"

"Do you know Rexroth pumps?" He said.

"We're having significant heat issues in that system, and they originate in the pumps according to our thermography"

"Rexroth technicians came, and they told us our only option was to replace the pumps, but they're at 12 week lead time."

"Can you quote them?"

We asked to review the data, and go over other details.

(We had our suspicion when we heard he had heat issues with the pump).
..and there it was: SUCTION STRAINERS.

"Have you ever replaced these?"

"We didn't even know they were there to begin with!"

"Remove them...don't even replace them."

Strainers removed. Problem solved.

We don't recommend suction strainers.

They're like a drug advertisement.

The side effects are worse than what they're there for!

And yes, we turned a 4-5 $ figure sale, into zero.

But we got 100% trust as a result.
