Setsu Nin To, Katsu Jin Ken — 殺人刀活人剣 — the killing sword, the life-giving sword. The phrase reaches back through the kenjutsu tradition to a single observation: the sword that ends a fight and the sword that prevents one are the same blade. Skill decides which. A tragic loss to our world. A man who’s timelessly relevant. RIP Wendall the world will miss you. 🌏 ❤️ Wendell Berry’s “A Poem on Hope” explores the difficulty of maintaining hope, especially with age, and suggests finding it by connecting deeply with one’s place and community. The poem emphasizes the importance of understanding and caring for one’s environment and neighbors, as well as listening to the wisdom of the land and its inhabitants.

The poem acknowledges that hope is not easily found through wishful thinking or predictions. It suggests that true hope arises from a deep connection to one’s physical place and the community within it. This connection involves understanding the unique characteristics of the place, caring for it, and recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things within that environment. The poem also highlights the importance of listening to the voices of the land, its history, and its people, both past and present. By understanding and respecting the place and its community, individuals can find a grounded and resilient form of hope that is not dependent on external circumstances. The poem concludes by suggesting that the hope we seek is found in the present moment, rooted in the earth beneath our feet and illuminated by the light within us. Link to poem in our profile.
