Tomorrow evening, Marblis will be showcasing our work at the California Academy of Sciences, as part of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Panoramic Progress event.

This annual event honors business and civic leaders across San Francisco. After the awards ceremony in the Academy’s all-digital planetarium, guests move into a reception across the museum with food, drinks, live music, and showcases from Yes SF innovators and Academy scientists. We’ll be there with our regenerative biomaterials, and we’d love to show you the materials up close and talk about what we’re making and why.

We’re at North Coast KelpFest! in Mendocino this Saturday, October 10.

Table: Find us at the Mendocino Art Center after the Seaweed Spectacle Parade, 12:30pm to 2:30pm. We’ll share our work about Urchinite and talk about how purple sea urchin can become something beautifully useful after removal from the ocean for kelp restoration.

Demo Day: From 3:30 to 5:00, we’ll speak alongside The Nature Conservancy.

KelpFest! brings together scientists, fishermen, Tribal leaders, artists, and chefs to support kelp forest resilience on the California coast. Most events are free and open to the public. Full schedule at northcoastkelpfest.org.

A gathering of designers and activists to share climate action initiatives, challenges, innovations and stories.

Join us in the North Bay in San Rafael where we’ll be talking about biobased materials and local manufacturing. Marblis, Ekoa, and Biome will be talking about their thoughts on sustainable manufacturing, biobased products, circularity, and more.

Marblis produces regenerative countertops and wall tiles made from sea urchin, Ekoa (Ekoa) makes flax-based biocomposite panels, and Biome (BIOME) manufactures living walls and planters that automate plant care in built space. Learn more at our October crawl!

Removing sea urchins brings kelp forests back! Beyond this, innovative approaches to restore kelp are underway - using robots to clear urchin, creating new markets for urchin like countertops & tile that could finance restoration, and re-introduction of natural predators like sunflower sea stars. We’re honored to work alongside Sunflower Star Laboratory BAY foundation Marauder Robotics The Nature Conservancy in CA MARBLIS and others, in tackling this challenge.

„Bay Foundation CEO Tom Ford set out in 2013 with an army of staff, paid divers, and volunteers to right their local systems, which he deemed “gonzo out of whack,” by eliminating excess purple urchins. Over time, as the population size approached a more ecologically sustainable level, the kelp came back, and in short order, so did the fish. To date, the effort has converted some 80 acres of barrens into lush forest, and it was a section of that forest that I got to visit alongside Tom”

Salt Orchid. We love the soft shaded vibrancy and delicate hues that capture the color story of purple sea urchins. A unique match for greys and neutrals.

Urchinite™ is made from purple sea urchins harvested from Big River, Mendocino— at The Nature Conservancy’s active kelp restoration site. Every square foot removes up to 70 sqft of urchins from the ocean floor, directly enabling kelp forest recovery.
