In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, we want to recognize ABES Engineering team members Eliane Volk and Stephanie Malmi Dunagan for their commitment to the field of civil engineering.

Eliane heads up our Louisville office while Stephanie is based in Memphis.

A graduate of the University of Memphis, Stephanie is working toward her Professional Engineer license and hopes to sit for the exam in the fall. She joined ABES in February of 2024. "One thing I enjoy about civil engineering is knowing that I'm contributing to the betterment of critical infrastructure in the community I'm working in."

Eliane is also studying for her Professional Engineer license. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from The University of Alabama and joined our team in January of this year. "I chose civil engineering because I’ve always wanted to understand how the structures and systems around us work. Being able to contribute to the infrastructure and industries that keep communities running is something I genuinely enjoy."

🌎 Five time zones!

During this week's ABES Engineering technical staff Teams meeting, we realized that we had team members attending from five different time zones. It's amazing to think about, but something we're pretty used to at ABES.

From the start, we've worked in a hybrid fashion, with many engineers and staff members based at our headquarters in Memphis, while others live and work in places like Seattle, WA; Missoula, MT; and Fort Collins, CO. We're proud that although we're not all together in one building in one city every day, we work seamlessly together as a team. This hybrid approach has allowed ABES to bring aboard some of the best in the engineering industry, and together we've been able to accomplish amazing things, inspiring projects that truly strengthen the communities we serve.

We look forward to continued growth for both ABES Engineering and ABES Contracting, and who knows, maybe a few more time zones.

The ABES Contracting team is proud to be a part of the Terminal Modernization and Seismic Program (TMSP) at the Memphis International Airport.

TMSP is a massive, $700 million project designed to:

🛫 Modernize the main terminal
🏗️ Ensure that buildings and critical infrastructure can withstand earthquake activity
🚗 Expand parking systems and provide upgraded amenities
🏢 Add a new administration building

Our team has been working under Turner Construction Company as a civil/site/utility sub on the new administration building, which has included the demolition of the existing tarmac, waterlines, and a jet fuel line. ABES Contracting is also responsible for the installation of the gravel base beneath the building slab as well as sanitary sewer service and stormwater lines from the new building to the existing lines. The job also required the installation of two large double-stacked trench boxes to facilitate the abandonment of an existing stormwater pipe that is 18' deep.

This a critical project for the Memphis community, ensuring that the airport can meet the future needs of our growing city, and we're excited to play a role in it.

For today's post, we're spotlighting the innovation and determination of one person - Boyan Slat - to clean up the world's rivers. After helping do just that around the world, he's now helping Los Angeles prepare for the 2028 Olympics by clearing its rivers of trash.

The once-child-wiz kid behind the Ocean Cleanup, Boyan Slat also invented a device for cleaning up rivers called the Interceptor.

We're excited to welcome Rodrigo "Roger" Rangel to the ABES Contracting team.

ABES Contracting it excited to welcome Nimi Kayihura as an intern for the 2026 summer season.

Nimi recently finished his freshman year at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, studying civil engineering. Some of you might recognize Nimi. He has interned for ABES Engineering for the past two summer, helping our engineering team with a wide variety of tasks. This summer, he's taking a contractor role to round out his experience.

So far, Nimi has assisted the ABES Contracting team with projects that include Big Hill Pond State Park renovations and a curb project in Lakewood, TN.

Nimi says he's enjoying the physical labor part of this summer's internship, which "makes the time go fast." He's also looking forward to advancing in his duties. "I'm excited to drive the machines," he says with a laugh.

When Nimi isn't working at ABES Contracting, he enjoys working out and listening to music, especially R&B and rap. And while he's currently a civil engineering major, Nimi is also considering a career in biomedical engineering. "I like how the human body functions ... It's so crazy all of the things happening in the body at any given time."
