Congratulations to Kevin Johns, PE on his election as Modjeski and Masters' next president! He will step into the role on Jan. 1, 2027, succeeding president Michael Britt.

With more than 28 years at the firm, Kevin has helped grow teams, expand technical capabilities, and bring collaborative leadership to complex engineering challenges. As president, he will build on that experience to guide the firm’s growth while preserving the culture, independence, and client relationships that define Modjeski and Masters.

In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, launching one of the largest public works projects in American history. In the decades that followed, Americans built more than 40,000 miles of highway across the country, redrawing the map of American life. Cities spilled into suburbs, trucking became a force in national commerce, and the country was connected coast to coast.

Seventy years later, that network is still a work in progress. I-81 runs more than 850 miles from Tennessee to the Canadian border, a major freight corridor through the heart of Pennsylvania. At its interchange with Route 115, M&M found a smarter path: a reconfiguration concept that eliminated three new bridges from the earlier plan. The design replaces the interchange's three existing bridges and adds a new direct ramp to I-81 Southbound. Construction is underway, with completion expected in 2027.

Crossing the Mackinac Bridge in high winds inside a vintage 1968 camper? Sounds intense. Unless you know who maintains the bridge!

We’ve been collecting road trip memories from our community to highlight the amazing bridges and landscapes that connect us. Check out this memory from Senior Technical Advisor Gwyn Marini.

“Our family took a camping trip in our vintage 1968 DeCamp camper in 2020. We drove over the Mackinac Bridge during a High Wind Advisory. The Bridge Authority provides Driver Assist Services to drive your vehicle over if you feel you cannot safely cross, particularly for high profile vehicles like campers.

“We braved it on our own knowing M&M and the Bridge Authority had safely maintained the bridge over its lifetime. After crossing, we enjoyed our views from the Straits State Park on the upper peninsula side.”

We’ve been collecting road trip memories from our Modjeski and Masters team to celebrate our nation’s vast and varied landscape. Check out this memory from Senior Communications Specialist Erin Bray.

“Last summer, one of my best friends and I went to Las Vegas for a concert. From there, we took a day trip to see the Grand Canyon. Along the way to the canyon, we stopped at the Hoover Dam and walked across the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. I remember thinking I'd officially worked at M&M long enough when I made it a point to look at the dedication plaque to see who designed the bridge.

“We were on the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and got to experience the Grand Canyon West Skywalk—a glass-bottomed bridge directly over the canyon! I thought I might be nervous to walk out on it, but then I thought about the talented engineers I know and remembered there are really smart people who design these structures.“

Thanks for sharing, Erin! Proof that once you work for an engineering firm, you never look at a bridge the same way again.

Earlier this month, some of our engineers had the opportunity to support our clients at the Mackinac Bridge Authority during the 68th Mackinac Bridge Walk, held annually on Labor Day. Known as the “Mighty Mac,” Mackinac Suspension Bridge connects St. Ignace, MI to Mackinaw City, MI, and is the 7th longest suspension bridge in the world.

Walkway Over the Hudson | New York
M&M performed detailed bridge inspections and provided repair recommendations to help preserve this iconic pedestrian bridge and ensure it remains safe for the thousands of visitors who use it each year.

San Rafael Pedestrian Bridge | California
This project marks M&M's first movable pedestrian bridge. Our team is helping develop a unique crossing that will improve accessibility while accommodating marine traffic.

South Burlington Pedestrian Bridge | Vermont
M&M provided structural engineering services for a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Interstate 89, helping create a safer connection for people traveling through the area.

Projects like these show how thoughtful infrastructure can bring people closer together. Whether it’s by connecting neighborhoods, creating safer crossings, or expanding access to outdoor spaces, pedestrian bridges play an important role in everyday life. Our engineers recently completed a detailed structural inspection of the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a fixed, high-level highway bridge spanning the St. Marys River and connecting the US and Canada.

The team used specialized rope access techniques and inspection vehicles to reach some of the bridge’s most critical steel components, inspecting all 30 spans on the American side. This detailed, hands-on work helps make sure the bridge remains safe for the communities, travelers, and commerce that depend on this vital international connection.

The original plans for the Blue Water Bridge were first conceived in 1927, but when the Great Depression hit, those plans were indefinitely delayed.

When the bridge finally opened to traffic in 1938, thousands of people showed up to make the crossing on foot, from Port Huron, Michigan to Point Edward, Ontario.
