Memorial Day is one of those days that deserves more than a quick post and a flag graphic. It’s a reminder that there are families and communities across this country missing someone who never came home. In an industry built around people and community, today is a chance to pause, remember, and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country and the sacrifice their families continue to carry every day.

Today, we want to recognize and celebrate Kevin Laune, Watchtower’s Director of Corporate Initiatives, for being honored and recognized for six years of service on the St. Louis Apartment Association’s Product & Service Council. During that time, Kevin also served as President of the Product & Service Council, held a seat on the SLAA Board of Directors, and contributed to national industry initiatives through National Apartment Association committees focused on DEI, communications, and marketing.

Kevin’s steady leadership, partnership mindset, and long-term commitment to the multifamily community have made a meaningful impact across the industry.

At Watchtower, we’re grateful to work alongside people who care deeply about strengthening the communities and organizations that support multifamily professionals every day.

Congratulations, Kevin, and thank you for your years of service, leadership, and investment in multifamily. We’re excited to see what’s ahead.

Many multifamily communities first turn to video surveillance when recurring issues begin impacting daily operations. Over time, though, the way teams use their systems often evolves beyond incidents alone.

From move-ins and vendor oversight to property walks and operational visibility, our latest article explores how clients use Watchtower differently as their communities and priorities change.

The 5 hidden costs of self-managed surveillance.
What looks cost-effective upfront can quietly add up over time.

1. Hardware replacement - cameras fail. When they're yours, replacing them is yours too.
2. IT overhead - camera networks require maintenance. Unless you have IT staff, this falls to someone not equipped.
3. Staff time on incident response - the average self-managed community spends 4-8 hours of staff time per incident on footage review. Monthly, that adds up fast.
4. Footage that can't be used - self-managed systems often produce footage that fails evidentiary standards.
5. Liability exposure - improperly stored footage creates legal risk.

Watchtower's flat monthly fee covers every one of these.

Which of these challenges shows up most at your property today, and how are you handling it? Share in the comments.

We provide video surveillance exclusively to the multifamily industry. Over time, a few questions come up again and again. Here’s what property teams need to know:

1️⃣ What if I don’t know when it happened?
Timeframe is everything. “Sometime in the last six months” makes review nearly impossible.
✅ The fix:
Daily site walks with checklists can turn months of uncertainty into a 24-hour window.
Ask better questions: Day or night? Exact location? Vehicle make, model, plate?
Use technology like license plate readers to narrow search windows further.
Small details = faster, more accurate reviews.

2️⃣What if it happened off camera?
Coverage isn’t perfect—but every incident still matters.
✅ Why submit anyway:
Even if the exact moment isn’t recorded, nearby cameras often reveal patterns, related incidents, or repeat offenders.
At minimum, submitting creates a documented record—valuable on its own.

3️⃣ Can you zoom in more?
Not like the movies.
Cameras record a fixed level of detail based on installation. Zooming after the fact just enlarges pixels, clarity decreases, it doesn’t magically improve.

The Bottom Line
Surveillance isn’t just about cameras.

Better inputs. Clear expectations. Consistent documentation.
That’s what turns footage into actionable insight—and makes a system truly valuable.

Watchtower is here to guide that process, answer questions, and help property teams turn everyday incidents into real outcomes.

Providing surveillance services exclusively to the multifamily industry, Watchtower Security has seen it all and heard it all, too. Proud to support the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. Golf Classic this year. It was a rewarding day on the course—made even more meaningful by being part of something bigger than the game itself.

There’s value in stepping away from the day-to-day now and then, especially for causes that bring people together and make a lasting impact in the communities we serve.

The Texas Apartment Association's One Conference is coming to a close. Good conversations, good people, and a lot of talk about what actually works in the real world. Not theory, not trends, just what teams are dealing with day to day. Jeff, Bryan, and Chris have been right in the middle of it all week. This industry doesn’t slow down. Forever Multifamily.
