Congratulations to Kevin Berera, our Metal My Way Grand Prize winner! He and a guest are heading to SEMA in Las Vegas this November.

Kevin's winning project is a giant RC buggy. It's 5 feet long, weighs about 160 lbs and runs on a 70cc engine. He designed and machined almost every part himself, from the welded tube chassis to the 6061 aluminum components. He even built the tube notcher and bender he used. It took seven years of weekends, with metal from Metal Supermarkets Vancouver (Richmond).

Check out the RC buggy in action: https://youtu.be/NBfW_0HRV2Y?si=478LeBgcuDaq1ToR

Thank you to everyone who entered this year. You made the judges' job very hard.

Did you know heat can change the strength, hardness, and flexibility of metal?

Through heat treatment, metals can be engineered for different performance needs. Processes like hardening, tempering, and annealing help manufacturers achieve the right balance of strength, durability, and workability.

Choosing the right metal and treatment can make all the difference in your next project!

10/16/2026

Put a magnet on a stainless steel appliance panel and it may stick, while the same magnet slides right off a 304 stainless sink. Both are genuine stainless steel, and the difference comes down to the grade family. Austenitic grades like 304 and 316 are generally non-magnetic, while ferritic grades like 430 and martensitic grades like 410 and 420 are magnetic.

A magnet test is a quick way to tell those families apart, but it isn't a quality test. Austenitic stainless can pick up some magnetism after it's bent or cold worked, and a magnetic grade isn't automatically a lesser one; it's built for different jobs, from trim and panels to blades and wear parts. The Metal Supermarkets stainless steel guide walks through the main grades, their properties, and where each one is typically used.

If you're matching existing stainless or choosing a grade for a new build, our Marietta counter team can help you sort it out and cut it to size with no minimum. The full guide is linked in the comments. Have you ever been surprised by a magnet sticking to something you were sure was stainless?

Wrought Iron vs. Cast Iron: What’s the Difference?

Not all iron is created equal! Wrought iron is known for its malleability and strength, while cast iron stands out for its hardness, wear resistance, and ability to create complex shapes.

Choosing the right material starts with understanding how each performs and what your project requires.

Get the facts in our blog: https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/wrought-vs-cast-iron-what-is-the-difference/

Pipe vs. Tube: Do You Know the Difference?

They may look similar, but choosing the right one matters!
Pipes are primarily designed to transport liquids and gases, while tubes are commonly used for structural applications, fabrication, and precision projects.

Understanding the differences in shape, sizing, and applications can help you choose the right material for your next project.

With deer season underway across Georgia, Hunters and the welders who build for them come in for trailer tongue and fender repairs, angle iron for ATV racks, square tubing for gambrel and skinning racks, and tubing and channel for shooting house frames. Many of these are one-off builds, which is exactly where no minimum order makes sense.

Material choice matters for anything that sits out in a Georgia field all season. Galvanized or well-painted steel holds up better than bare mild steel for racks and frames left outdoors, aluminum keeps a game cart or ladder light enough to carry in, and expanded metal or bar grating makes a solid, drainable floor for platforms and trailer decks.

We cut everything to your list so the pieces are ready to weld when you get back to the shop or the camp, and our bilingual team can help you sort out sizes and wall thickness if you're not sure. What's on your build list before opening morning?

Two of the shapes we cut most often are square tubing and angle iron, and customers building frames, carts, racks, and stands ask all the time which one they should be using. Both are strong, both weld well, and both come in mild steel and aluminum. The difference is in how they handle load and how they look when the build is done.

Square tubing is closed on all four sides, which makes it much stiffer against twisting. That's why it's the go-to for trailer tongues, welding carts, gates, and table legs that need to stay square under load, and it gives a clean, finished look with no open edges. Angle iron is open, lighter per foot, and easier to bolt through and fasten panels to, which makes it a strong choice for shelving frames, brackets, bed frames, and bracing where parts attach to a flat face.

Plenty of good builds use both: tube for the main frame, angle for the shelves or mounting points. Our Marietta team cuts both to length, miters corners, and drills holes before you leave, with no minimum order.

For your last frame project, did you go with square tube, angle, or a mix, and would you choose the same way again?
