Dianne Totten Handwovens

Dianne Totten Handwovens Extensively exploring a variation of the shibori technique has opened up a whole new weaving world of possibilities. No dyeing involved.

I call the resulting fabric “crimp cloth.” Learn what it’s all about through my current workshop, “Crimp and Create.” "Crimp and Create"
This is an on-loom workshop taking fiber in a new direction by creating “crimp cloth.” Using a variation of woven shibori for both warp and weft, learn to create fabric with permanently crimped designs that hold their memory even when washed. Participants will

draft, weave, and crimp their samples in class to discover the endless possibilities. Learn how the fabric can be used for entire garments as well as for permanent pleating to replace knitted ribbing for a sweater or to add a knit look to the collar area of a jacket. Sewing tips for using this amazing cloth will be included. Skill level: beginner to advanced
Equipment required:
Loom/student - minimum of 4 shafts necessary – 8 or more shafts is even better!

Registration for Midwest Weavers Conference 2025 closes at midnight on 3/31/25! If you haven't decided what classes to take, I'd love to have you in mine.

3-day "Crimp and Create," June 9-11.
This is an on-loom workshop taking fiber in a new direction by creating “crimp cloth.” Learn to create fabric with permanently crimped designs that hold their memory even when washed. Apply this stash-busting technique to any threading and learn the thought process that will lead to endless possibilities for creating magic cloth. Participants will draft, weave, and crimp their samples in class. Learn how the fabric can be used for one-size-fits-all garments that flatter any figure, scarves and shawls that won’t slide off your shoulders, and knit-look ribbing for a sweater or jacket collar. Garment design and sewing tips are included. Skill level: Adventurous beginner and beyond.

2-day "Design Inlay Rag Rugs and More...." June 12-13.
Add a unique touch to your rag project - whether it is a rug, wall hanging, table runner, or place mats, etc. Creatively piece together fabric strips to form a fabric block. Cut the block into weft strips and weave into a plain weave threading. Use fabric paints to create designs and learn an inlay process to make your project special. Fish, flowers, and butterflies are a few design ideas. No special artistic ability is required, as designs can be copied or traced. All levels welcome.

It was so good to once again be teaching in person. After pandemic postponements,, workshops with Illinois Prairie Weavers and Duneland Weavers Guild of Northern Indiana finally happened. The wait was worth it for me to meet more wonderful, talented weavers. Check out some of their samples.

I have DVD’s available:
"Woven Shibori, Making Crimp Cloth" covers how to weave crimp cloth in both warp and weft. You’ll learn how to design the drafts and process the cloth and how color and crimp interact to create fascinating patterns and effects. Also, get ideas for using your stash in crimp cloth projects. When I send your order, I will email the printable Handout with tips and tricks, fiber facts, drafts, record sheets for your own designs, and more. (Two discs, 210 minutes, total)
"Woven Shibori, Sewing with Crimp Cloth" covers how to plan a garment using crimp cloth, making simple 3-seam and 5 or 6-seam garments, how to add sleeves, options for edge finishes, and how to care for your crimp garments. Crimp cloth is the perfect fabric to create garments that fit and flatter every body type. It is perfect for travel and never wrinkles even when stuffed in the suitcase! (One disc, 67 minutes)
Cost: “Making” - $35; “Sewing” - $20, both for $50. Shipping included. To order: [email protected]

Thank you to the Mother Lode Weavers and Spinners in Sonora, CA, and the Hangtown Fiber Guild in Placerville, CA, for inviting me to teach my Crimp and Create Workshop for their guilds in May. The Mother Lode Weavers sponsored a third class, “Sewing with Crimp Cloth.” In a few cases sampling from the workshop resulted in the fabric used for the sewing class. If was fun to watch the creativity flow. Pictures follow.
