What began as a general store and bait shop in 1931 evolved into one of the Florida Keys’ most legendary landmarks—No Name Pub. Over the decades, the quirky Big Pine Key establishment developed a colorful reputation, including a brief stint as a brothel in the late 1930s and a thriving local hangout by the 1950s. Perhaps its most controversial chapter came during the 1970s and 1980s, when large amounts of illegal drug money flowed through the Keys. According to local lore, patrons had so much cash that they began stapling dollar bills to the pub’s walls, creating a tradition that still exists today. Covered in thousands of signed bills, the walls of No Name Pub remain a unique reminder of one of the most notorious eras in Florida Keys history.

The endangered Key deer, a small subspecies of white-tailed deer, migrated to the Florida Keys from the mainland thousands of years ago during the Wisconsin Ice Age when a land bridge connected the islands. The earliest written account of the species dates back to the 1550s, recorded by shipwrecked Spanish sailor Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda. Once found throughout the Lower Keys, Key deer now live mainly on Big Pine Key and nearby islands, where fewer than 1,000 remain due to habitat loss, vehicle strikes, disease, illegal feeding, and the growing impacts of climate change.
