Mass timber is changing how we build in America.

These engineered wood products are strong, fire resistant, and versatile enough to replace materials like concrete and steel in many buildings. Demand is growing quickly, but for years the U.S. supply has struggled to keep up.

Through the Wood Innovations Program, the USDA Forest Service is helping expand domestic manufacturing so more projects can use wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Innovation in wood products is opening new opportunities for forests, communities, and the future of construction.

📣👏🌲 It's Forestry Education Friday!

In forestry, *Free to Grow* describes a stage in a tree’s life when it has enough access to sunlight, water, nutrients, and space to grow without significant competition from surrounding vegetation.

Reaching this stage is an important goal in forest management. By reducing competing plants around young trees, foresters help ensure they can establish, grow efficiently, and develop into healthy, productive forests over time. 🌲

Forestry is about more than trees. It is about people.

Loggers, foresters, truck drivers, mill workers, engineers, and researchers all play a role in turning sustainably sourced timber into products we use every day.

Wood products support jobs, families, and communities across the country. When forests are managed well, everyone benefits.

Healthy forests. Strong communities. Sustainable wood products.
