Throwing it back to one of the true legends of the crane and shovel world — the mighty Northwest 180-D Series II. 💪
We were digging through some old product literature and found this original Northwest Engineering brochure packed with specs, features, and even a competitive comparison against the Bucyrus-Erie 88B Series IV. Back when machines were built from heavy steel, powered by massive Murphy diesels, and designed to work day in and day out in the toughest conditions imaginable.
Some standout specs from the 180-D Series II:
• 97.5 Ton crane rating
• 5 yd. shovel capacity
• Murphy AU-1360 turbocharged diesel pushing 358 HP
• Alloy steel castings throughout the travel base and rotating base
• Cushion-Air controls and independent boom hoist
• Operating weight around 250,000 lbs
The comparison sheet really shows how Northwest Engineering stacked the 180-D against the competition — proving why these machines earned their reputation on jobsites across America.
Machines like these helped build the industry and paved the way for the cranes and draglines we work on today. Old iron, manual controls, grease-covered hands, and operators that knew every sound and feel of the machine.
