We are pleased to announce that Senior Engineer Akshay Beniwal, PE and Senior Associate BJ Lee, PhD, PE, SE will present at the upcoming American Society of Civil Engineers 11th Forensic Engineering Congress: Decoding Failure on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

Their presentation, titled "Design Considerations for Structural Engineers in Mixed Construction," will highlight the common challenges in mixed construction through examples and case studies and discusses design considerations for engineers that can help mitigate these problems.

WDP is proud to recognize Senior Engineer Kelsey Sheridan, PE and Staff Engineer David Orense, EIT for their participation in the 2nd Annual Concrete Day at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, bringing together students, faculty, and industry professionals to learn, connect, and explore opportunities in the concrete industry.

Kelsey represented WDP on the Careers in Concrete panel, sharing insights from her experience and discussing career paths, advancements in the industry, and lessons learned throughout her career.

Following the panel, Kelsey and David led a hands-on demonstration highlighting several nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods used in our concrete investigation work. Students had the opportunity to try ground penetrating radar (GPR), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and impact-echo (IE) and learn how these methods are used to assess concrete materials.

Thank you to UMD and our industry partners for hosting another great Concrete Day and for giving us the opportunity to share our experience with the next generation of engineers!

We are pleased to announce that Senior Engineer Kelsey Sheridan, PE will present at the upcoming International Concrete Repair Institute - (ICRI) Fall Convention on October 20, 2026.

Kelsey's presentation, titled "Selecting the Right Repair: A Case Study in Concrete Repair Decision Making," will focus on selecting appropriate repair methods for aging architectural concrete. The presentation will highlight how service life, engineering judgment, and stakeholder objectives work together to evaluate rehabilitation strategies and develop solutions focused on long-term performance.

This month, we are highlighting our ongoing collaboration with RRMM Architects at Virginia Commonwealth University’s historic Williams House in Richmond.

Built in 1890–1891, Williams House is a Romanesque Revival residence designed by noted Richmond architect Marion J. Dimmock. Distinguished by its massive rock-faced granite exterior, the building was acquired by VCU’s predecessor institution and today houses offices associated with VCU’s Department of African American Studies.

WDP was engaged to evaluate the exterior envelope and develop repair documents, with one of the central challenges being the need to balance historic preservation best practices with the performance demands of a modern academic facility. One example is the restoration strategy for the wood windows and leaded stained glass, which extended the service life of these historic elements while also improving the energy efficiency of the building envelope by reducing air leakage.

WDP also provided design services for the replacement of the terra cotta, flat-seam metal, and EPDM roofs. Roof replacement at a historic building requires careful consideration of how changes in materials and insulation can affect long-term moisture performance and durability. Drawing on WDP’s involvement in the development of ASTM E3258-25, “Standard Guide for Evaluation of Changes to the Thermal, Moisture and Ventilation Performance of Existing Roof Enclosures (with Vented or Sealed Attic or Rafter Spaces),” as well as our experience with hygrothermal modeling, the project team evaluated these considerations as part of the roof design to support a restoration that preserves the building’s historic character while promoting long-term performance.

WDP engineering intern Emma Booth recently attended Behind the Chisel: A Stone Carving Interactive Session. The program explored architectural stone repair and historic masonry preservation before attendees tried their hand at carving under the guidance of stone carvers from Lorton Stone. Thank you to WIA, Quinn Evans and Lorton Stone for providing this hands-on learning experience!
