After spending a week in Kansas, with temps in the mid-90's, it was nice to come home to a cold front and some phone calls.
Client's deer was found alive 21 hours after the shot. It had travelled approximately 400 yards total, but was 275 yards from where the shot took place. Originally found bedded 5 yards from a pond, it moved beds twice, about 10 yards each time, in the hour and a half we watched it. Coyotes checking on it sporadically but scared off every time the deer moved. The client ended up coming back at midnight to find the deer expired. If this client would have started tracking this deer the following morning, who knows how this story would have ended.
I cannot stress enough how important PATIENCE is in your success. The steps you take after the shot, almost certainly will determine if you ever see or lay your hands on that animal. After over 60 recovery attempts and over 60 hours of operation, only one thing remains constant, patience is key.
My phone is always on if you ever want my opinion. I usually have a pretty good idea how things are going to go before I get to a recovery by the information collected on the phone call.
Good luck out there.
