Daily firefighting doesn’t always begin with a major supply-chain failure. Sometimes it begins with a screw, nut, and washer.

A high-volume OEM was using a three-piece fastening system that required two-handed installation. Operators frequently dropped or misplaced components, slowing production and creating daily interruptions. Inconsistent torque also caused occasional joint loosening and quality concerns.

During an on-site application review, Field’s engineering team examined what the assembly process was asking operators to do. The team recommended replacing the three-piece system with a structural rivet.

The result: assembly time decreased from 17 seconds to 4.5 seconds; installation became one-handed; torque variation was eliminated; approximately 2,500 labor hours were saved annually; and total savings reached $133,274.

The opportunity wasn’t simply to find a lower-priced part. It was to make the entire process work better.

Inventory records stopped matching reality. Consumption changed. Lead times increased. Production plans shifted. Expedites became more frequent—but were treated as isolated events instead of warning signs.

By the time production is affected, the team is no longer managing inventory. It is managing a disruption.
