Madison Fire Department personnel secure the structure in the aftermath of a balcony collapse at 544 W. Mifflin St. during the annual Mifflin Street Block Party on Saturday. The balcony collapsed due to a rotted front beam concealed by metal cladding, city officials said Monday.

City officials don't believe anyone purposely hid rotten wood with metal cladding to avoid detection and that prosecution is "highly unlikely," said Downtown Ald. Mike Verveer, 4th District.

Which way out - a fire escape plan could be your best chance to survive. Be sure to look over all egress routes that they are unobstructed and structurally sound. Egresses must be certified as safe for intended use every five years. Is your fire escape certified?
