🛠️ Raising Hope in Hard Hats: A Message to Our Construction Family

The numbers are real—and they’re heartbreaking. More and more of our brothers and sisters in the construction industry are struggling in silence, and su***de rates continue to rise across our trades. These aren’t just statistics; they’re people we know. People we’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with. Good, hardworking people carrying loads we often can’t see.

But here’s the powerful truth: we’re talking about it now. And that means change is coming.

In an industry built on strength, grit, and pushing through, we’ve learned to power past pain. But real strength—true resilience—isn’t in silence. It’s in reaching out, in checking in, in lifting each other up when the weight gets too heavy. The tools are in our hands—not just hammers and harnesses, but compassion, courage, and connection.

Congratulations to our very own Phil Stanley! On November 17, 2023, he will be inducted into the USA Softball of Piedmont VA Hall of Fame. Phil was deeply involved in USA Softball for over 30 years. Hawkins-Graves is proud of his achievements and that he is part of our team. If you see him, please congratulate him!

On October 7, 2023, 48 employees, family, and friends gathered to participate in the American Su***de Prevention Foundation “Out of the Darkness” community walk. We walked in memory of Walker Graham who was tragically lost on October 17, 2022. Wearing shirts emblazoned with “ ” on the front, and “W4W” (Walk for Walker) on the back, it was another example of what makes Hawkins-Graves so special. Money and awareness were raised, and that is really important, but our people were there to support Walker’s mom, Melissa Graham. Hawkins-Graves is a family that sticks together and that is what you see in these pictures.

For all of us close to this situation, the loss of Walker forever changed how we will think about su***de. We saw and felt the pain and anguish. It became real and personal. We recognize that change is needed and that we all need to think differently and be supportive of a culture that’s smarter about mental health. Melissa is determined to make a difference, to change at least one, and her HG family is with her.
