The goal when planting is to place the seed in the soil without being able to see how it was placed there. This needs some improvement. Notice the drier soil that fell into the seed trench on the right side and some air pockets on the left.

Used drone images + AI to measure crop emergence in cold conditions.

We saw a 15–20% difference in plant survival.

The AI results matched hand counts—but covered 3 locations in about 10% of the time.

That early gap can mean 20–30+ bushels per acre by harvest.

Small differences early turn into big results later.

March 30th, conditions lined up just right to run my own saturated cold germ test. I loaded 15 corn hybrids into the planter and put in two rows of each ahead of a cold, wet forecast.

Normally I send seed off to a lab for this, but the timing and weather gave me a good chance to see how these hybrids handle stress in real field conditions.

The first step of preparing for 2026 corn crop. Managing residue from the previous crop is one of our greatest challenges and assets that we have.
