MHP Structural Engineers

MHP Structural Engineers Design Services: Structural Design for buildings is the foundation on which MHP has built its practice. We have lived tight time-frames on large portfolios.

MHP is a diversified structural engineering company offering a broad range of services, including traditional design, seismic risk assessment, blast and progressive collapse mitigation and forensic / expert witness services. In our 40+ year history, we have completed substantial projects, from entire new high-school campuses, to new hospitals, hotels, industrial buildings, big-box retail, 600-unit

residential complexes, and more. But we support clients and projects of any size and complexity, including renovations and tenant improvements. We provide services from conceptual design through construction support, with creativity, responsiveness, and an appreciation of our client’s vision. More than half of MHP’s staff are licensed Structural Engineers, a very large percentage, and one that speaks to our expertise and experience. We work with the latest technologies, from passive energy dissipation employing viscous dampers, to carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). MHP is a certified DSA plan checker, and our OSHPD experience is extensive and varied. And our synergy with our Seismic Risk and Due-Diligence practices enhances our ability to bring clients state-of-the-art design solutions. Due Diligence Services: The Due Diligence field is like no other. The pace of transactions for investment quality assets is mind-boggling. The opportunities gained with the assistance of a competent due-diligence team, or conversely the exposure created, are enormous. MHP has been a leader in the due-diligence arena since the early 1980s, and has evaluated thousands of projects for our clients. We serve on committees to grow our expertise and to lead the field in standards development. Importantly, in addition to being one of the largest seismic due-diligence providers in the country, MHP is at its core, a Design firm. Our design work provides code expertise and construction knowledge that firms providing only due-diligence services do not have. Our expertise and full-scope of services allows MHP to assist clients from initial Level 1 Seismic Risk Assessments, to detailed Level 3 investigations involving computer analysis and materials testing, and, when required, full Seismic Retrofit Design and Construction Support services. Seismic Retrofit & Evaluation Services: The number of existing buildings vulnerable to earthquake damage is astounding, and is not well understood even by those in the Building Industry. We intend to fix that, one building at a time. At MHP, “Making Buildings Safe” is our motto. But, it is not just a tagline, it is truly our passion. We have spent many years developing technical expertise in Performance-based evaluation and strengthening of existing buildings through our recruiting and marketing, advanced degrees, and participation in seminars and committees that develop the technical knowledge required in this complex arena. Our capabilities include detailed non-linear computer modeling, and creative strengthening technologies employing the latest products and materials (passive energy dissipation, BRBF, CFRP). We participate in industry technical and code-development committees, and are intimately familiar with AB 300, ASCE 41, and recent soft-story and Non-Ductile Concrete (NDC) ordinances. Let us help you accurately identify your risks, and implement appropriate mitigation measures to make your buildings safe.

In the aftermath of the 6.4 and 7.1 Magnitude earthquakes near Ridgecrest and Torna, CA, MHP Principal Ken O’Dell was among researchers observing the damage in the affected communities. As President of SEAOSC, Ken represented the Structural Engineering Community in interviews with NBC, LA Times, CBS and other news outlets to increase awareness regarding older building performance and discuss expected damage levels for modern buildings, which are designed to preserve life-safety and not specifically to limit damage.
