Moffatt & Nichol–Stantec Nationwide JV has been selected for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) $1 billion Nationwide Architect-Engineer (A-E) IDIQ Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC).

Administered by the U.S. Coast Guard, the contract will support architectural and engineering services for DHS facilities across all 50 states and U.S. territories. The work can range from facility assessments, renovations, and new construction to civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical, and coastal engineering.

This award builds on our longstanding federal work and expands our ability to bring our experience in complex facilities and waterfront infrastructure to a broader range of DHS projects.

Through the Moffatt & Nichol-Stantec Nationwide JV, we look forward to supporting the facilities and infrastructure that enable DHS missions across the country.

We’re honored to be recognized by Partners for Environmental Progress with a 2026 Environmental Stewardship Award for our coastal restoration work along the Dauphin Island Causeway.

Dredging is essential to maintaining navigation channels and waterways, but what happens to that material afterward is an important part of the equation. When conditions allow, dredged sediment can be put to beneficial use instead of treated simply as material to be disposed of.

At Moffatt & Nichol, we work with clients to find opportunities to use dredged material for coastal restoration, habitat creation, shoreline protection and other applications. Along the Dauphin Island Causeway, that meant using the material to help protect the causeway while creating valuable marsh habitat. Through an agreement between Mobile County and the USACE Mobile District, this project used more than one million cubic yards of material generated from the Mobile Harbor Deepening Project.

Beneficial use is one way dredging projects can do more than maintain navigation. They can also contribute to healthier, more resilient coastlines.

Sandy beaches are a defining feature of Southern California's coastline, supporting recreation, tourism, and coastal ecosystems. But our beaches also play a critical role in coastal risk management and resilience.

Wide sandy beaches dissipate wave energy and reduce storm surge impacts. By doing this they function as a vital first line of defense during extreme weather events. If they shrink, storm forces hitting shoreline infrastructure are stronger.

Maintaining beach profiles, beach nourishment, replacing lost sand, and ensuring new sand is placed in a way that helps manage storm impact are effective resilience tools and help maintain this important intertidal zone. This year it’s particularly important with the "super" El Niño event.

We are working with organizations up and down the California coast to help manage flood and storm risk and increase resilience. Unfortunately there are no quick fixes, as this article explains. Sand is a moving commodity, and we need to continually manage our beaches. For this storm season, there are actions we can – and are – taking now, but a longer term strategy is critical to resilience for the years to come.

Moffatt & Nichol is supporting the recapitalization of the US commercial shipyard industry. Our Shipyard Infrastructure Group recently undertook the buy side technical due diligence for Antin Infrastructure Partners in its acquisition of the Vigor Marine Group, supported by our Maritime Commercial Advisory Group.

The Vigor Marine Group has five locations with six drydocks and 29 berths. It is a provider of maintenance, repair and overhaul services, as well as marine fabrication and services to the naval, defense and commercial maritime sectors in the United States.

The acquisition marks Antin's continued investment in United States infrastructure, following significant investments in the transportation, energy and digital sectors. It represents the seventh investment by the firm's $11.8 billion Flagship Fund V, which focuses on long-term investments in established infrastructure companies in North America and Europe.

Moffatt & Nichol's Shipyard Infrastructure Group consists of experts that can provide both commercial advisory services and technical services such as assessment of existing infrastructure, yard planning, digital twins of operations and design of marine infrastructure.

New York’s subways illustrate the resilience challenge facing cities globally: aging infrastructure that’s used by millions per day, too important to close, too expensive to replace, but struggling to cope with changing weather patterns amid a changing climate.

As this article in the New York Times explains, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when retrofitting resilience and ‘spongy’ solutions. Instead, resilience is born out of a balance of needs, solution effectiveness, budget, space, and risk.

In the article Daniel Zarrilli, Moffatt & Nichol’s VP of Water and Climate Resilience, explains one of the options, which is to gain a clear understanding of surface level water movement across the network and identify opportunities to manage flows during extreme rainfall events, enabling a more balanced and risk-based distribution of excess water based on the capacity of downstream infrastructure to avoid catastrophic outcomes.

As a key member of Moffatt & Nichol’s Waterfronts team, Regional Director of Planning and Design Nicole Pauly Shaw specializes in the planning and design of resilient marina infrastructure.
