Jim Frohn, Grafton County Extension Forester, was walking in the woods the other day and came across a great example of future pit and mound topography.

Pit and mound topography are features that occur when trees are uprooted and fall over. In this photo you'll see an old wind-felled tree in the process of decay. The pit from where the root system was, the mound created by the decaying root system, and the old trunk are all clearly visible.
