🚚 Monday Morning Business Tip: Avoid Costly Shipping Surprises 💸

We see this one bite sellers all the time, so here’s a quick heads-up to help you avoid surprise carrier charges 👇

⚠️ Tip #1: UPS does NOT like poly mailers
UPS applies additional fees for anything not shipped in a cardboard box — and yes, that includes poly mailers.
Their explanation is that non-boxed items damage conveyor belts 🤷‍♂️
📦 Bottom line: If it’s going UPS, use a box or expect an adjustment.

⚠️ Tip #2: “Billable Weight” is NOT actual weight
UPS and FedEx are now aggressively enforcing Billable (DIM) Weight, not what the package actually weighs.
As shown in the screenshots:

Actual weight wasn’t disputed

-The carrier recalculated the charge using dimensions after quote and delivery

-The cost was adjusted after delivery

Even worse?
When buying labels through platforms like eBay, the shipping calculator does not always catch DIM weight, even though you enter dimensions and weight.

📏 If the box is large for its weight, you will get hit later.

Our advice:
✔️ Use the smallest box possible
✔️ Double-check dimensions
✔️ Expect adjustments on lightweight, bulky packages
✔️ Don’t assume the checkout price is final

🧨 Ever heard of “explosive rivets”? Yeah… we hadn’t either.

While purchasing the inventory of a retiring aviation hardware store, we uncovered a bag labeled “explosive rivets.” Turns out, they’re very real — and very cool.

These were some of the original blind rivets, what you'd think of today as a "Pop Rivet", developed in the 1930s for aircraft repairs. Instead of traditional buck rivets that required full disassembly and a second set of hands, these used a tiny internal charge to expand and lock in place instantly.

From my understanding a flat headed soldering iron was used to set them into place.

Not much time would pass before the huck rivet would come and these would be phased out.

✈️ During wartime aviation, speed mattered — and this was cutting-edge engineering at the time.
