"Gene was the ideal professional mentor. He taught me how to approach problems, not just solve them." - Robert Marino, PE, Chairman of the Board

As Mueller grew, Gene Nerf, PE became a central figure in how technical knowledge was shared across the firm. He worked closely with younger engineers, not just reviewing drawings, but explaining how decisions would affect the building as a whole.

His approach emphasized something simple but important: engineering is not just about solving a problem once, but about understanding how that solution performs over time.

That mindset helped shape how Mueller teams were trained and how projects were delivered, particularly in cultural and institutional spaces where long-term performance matters as much as the innovation.

Every company has people who help define how it grows.

Gene Nerf, PE was one of those people at Mueller.

He joined the firm in its earlier days as draftsman, working on hand-drawn plans and learning the details of engineering from the ground up.

Over time, he grew into a leadership role, helping guide projects, mentor younger engineers, and shape the way the firm approached its work.

His career reflected a belief that great engineers are built through experience and a willingness to learn every part of the process.

Over decades of collaboration, Mueller became more than a consultant. We became a trusted partner in helping these institutions evolve while preserving what made them special.

In the 1970s, we began working with institutions like the Lyric Opera House and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Each project came with its own challenges, from preserving world-class acoustics to maintaining precise environmental conditions for priceless artwork.

What started as individual commissions turned into long-term partnerships built on trust, consistency, and a deep understanding of each client's needs.

Over the years, those relationships allowed us to support multiple renovations, system upgrades, and evolving building requirements.

It's a reminder that good engineering solves problems in the moment, but great engineering builds relationships that last.

Progress is taking shape!

Walls are going up, and the layout of our new office is starting to come into focus. Each space is now clearly defined and beginning to reflect how we'll work day to day.

It's only thing to see plans on paper. It's another to start walking through them in real life.

More to come as things continue to move forward.

As our firm began taking on more complex work, the firm's direction was shaped by its founder, Richard Mueller.

From the beginning, his focus was consistent. Richard Mueller believed engineering was ultimately about trust: delivering thoughtful solutions, building lasting relationships, and creating opportunities for people to grow.

That approach influenced how projects were pursued, how teams worked together, and how the company expanded over time. Those principles have shaped the firm's culture from the beginning and continue to influence how we approach projects today.

In the 1970s, Baltimore nearly lost one of its most iconic performance venues.

The Lyric Opera House, known for its world-class acoustics, was falling behind. No air conditioning. Outdated systems. An aging structure that couldn’t meet modern expectations.

The question facing Baltimore was simple, but significant: preserve it or replace it?

What followed was a public debate that lasted years, drawing attention across the city. This wasn’t just about a building. It was about Baltimore’s cultural identity.

When the decision was made to restore it, Mueller Associates was brought on to help solve a new challenge: How do you modernize a historic performance hall without changing the very thing that made it special?

That meant designing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems that were powerful, but silent. Invisible. Precise.

It was early in our history, but it reflected an approach that still defines our work today: support the space without taking away from it.

Because the best engineering doesn’t compete with the performance. It makes the performance possible.

This past weekend, our team traded the office for a little friendly competition at Arundel Golf Park.

Even with a little rain passing through, we still had a great time playing mini golf, practicing our swings at the driving range, and spending time together outside of the office. Moments like these are always a great reminder to slow down and have some fun as a team.
