Few engineering projects support discovery on a global scale. But in the 1980s, Mueller Associates contributed to the design of the Space Telescope Science Institute on The Johns Hopkins University's campus.

The facility would go on to support operations for the Hubble Space Telescope and later, the James Webb Space Telescope.

Designing systems for a facility like this required a different level of reliability. Even minor disruptions could affect critical operations supporting some of the world's most important astronomical research.

Working alongside project partners, Mueller Associates helped develop systems that could maintain stable conditions and support continuous performance.

It remains as one example of how Mueller's work has quietly supported institutions advancing science, research, and discovery.

Before computers, engineering looked very different.

When Paul Czajkowski, PE started his career at Mueller in 1980, everything was done by hand. Hours were spent at drafting tables, perfecting every line on a drawing.

Not long after, the industry began to shift to computer-aided design (CAD). The transition wasn't instant...or easy.

Early systems were slow, took up entire rooms, and didn't always cooperate. Simple calculations could take hours to run, and sometimes the results wouldn't come through at all.

But even with the challenges, our team leaned into the change. Staying at the forefront of technology wasn't optional, it was how we continued delivering the level of quality our clients expected.

Some of Mueller's most influential work began with a project others avoided.

In 1987, Paul Czajkowski, PE took on a project involving underground fuel storage tanks. It came with high environmental risk, strict regulations, and little in-house experience to rely on.

At the same time, new EPA requirements meant facilities across Maryland had to upgrade or replace aging tank systems to prevent leaks and groundwater contamination.

Paul learned it from the ground up.

He surveyed sites across the state, from highway maintenance facilities to Maryland State Police and National Institutes of Health locations, often without accurate drawings. From there, Mueller developed systems for leak detection, corrosion protection, and fuel storage that could be adapted across sites.

What began as a single assignment evolved into years of specialized environmental and fuel systems work across Maryland. Many of those systems are still in operation today, quietly doing exactly what they were designed to do.

Gene Nerf, PE was one of those people at Mueller.

Over decades of collaboration, Mueller became more than a consultant. We became a trusted partner in helping these institutions evolve while preserving what made them special.

In the 1970s, we began working with institutions like the Lyric Opera House and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Each project came with its own challenges, from preserving world-class acoustics to maintaining precise environmental conditions for priceless artwork.

What started as individual commissions turned into long-term partnerships built on trust, consistency, and a deep understanding of each client's needs.

Over the years, those relationships allowed us to support multiple renovations, system upgrades, and evolving building requirements.
