Many say we know more about outer space than we do the oceans of our own planet. The deep ocean is a place few have been and has required some of the world’s most innovative engineering solutions. The RP14 picture is a 475,000 IN-LB (53,668 NM) torque-rated valve actuator with a gear efficiency of 94%. This product is reshaping the subsea industry as this gear efficiency allows 2-3x less energy to operate a subsea valve. The WedgeRock RW series high-efficiency wormgear was designed for subsea first then outfitted for above-ground service. The wormgear housing casting has enough material at all dynamic and static ingress points so it can be double sealed without requiring additional parts. The RW series is always IP68 rated from continuous submersion and can be outfitted with compensation to be confidently placed on the ocean floor. The RW14’s pictured were designed in both right-hand and left-hand projection with class 4 interfaces for a double block and bleed valve at nearly 500 Ft (152 M) below the ocean surface. This gear package tested successfully in a hyperbaric chamber at 232 PSI (16 Bar) for 24 hours and a final test of 5134 PSI (354 Bar) for 15 minutes before installation beneath the ocean surface.

We have been hard at work packaging our last few gearboxes for a large pigging operation project order. The project is currently in stage 1 of 3 and this stage required the team at WedgeRock to design and build 71 wormgears ranging from 75,000 – 225,000 In-Lbs ( 8,474 to 25,422 NM). WedgeRock gearboxes are often asked for on pigging projects as we cater our designs to consider the human safety factor of safe pipeline operation. High-cycle, high-efficiency, and high-integrity pipelines are something the team at WedgeRock is passionate about. Consider the team at WedgeRock with your next pigging project!

Let WedgeRock provide a solution specific to your application. The RW12 Subsea type 4 override pictured, was designed for our customer’s actuator and valve package and compliant with . When coupled with retrievable clamp assembly, our overrides are fully compliant with Type 2. Compliance with new API specifications ensures the most robust package with redundant operation and indication. WedgeRock designs override to operate simply without external mechanical locking or disengaging devices. Fewer parts increased reliability, and safety is central to all of our designs – topside or ocean floor.

Scotland’s Specialist Valve Services (SVS) were contacted by a customer to intervene on a Subsea Actuation package that was proving problematic at the final SIT. SVS approached WedgeRock to determine if we could provide a “bolt-on” secondary override system for 3 Subsea Actuators. Although the exact design did not yet exist, the WedgeRock technical team was confident that we had the basis of design suited to the application; the problem was more operational than technical due to the project timeline requiring a “miracle delivery.”.

Working closely with the SVS Engineering (re-designing the primary actuators), WedgeRock determined a loss-motion override compliant with new API 6DSSX specifications was best suited for the actuated valves, engineered and manufactured to bolt directly to the subsea actuator package SVS were designing.

Small problem - the ship delivering the larger project to West Africa was scheduled to leave port in 8 weeks and the overrides were not yet fully designed, but Fifty days after receipt of PO the RW12 loss-motion overrides were en route to Aberdeen, where the SVS Team were installing, and qualifying the valve and actuation package before fitting Quayside prior to load out to the ship. The 3 parts, manufactured some 4,600 miles away fitted and tested the first time, allowing a tight but on-time delivery.

The 2 project teams worked closely and effectively, openly ensuring all the information the customer required was available and on the back of this success, we would like to thank the SVS team for this opportunity.
