We recommend regular maintenance on the GM 2.4L engine, with special attention to the PCV system. This engine uses a small metered port within the PCV passage that can easily become restricted by sludge, varnish, and carbon buildup over time. When this passage becomes blocked, crankcase pressure cannot vent properly and begins to build inside the engine.

On vehicles such as the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, that excess pressure often pushes past the weakest sealing points. In many cases, it forces oil past seals and gaskets—most commonly the rear main seal. Once the rear main seal fails, oil leakage can become severe, and repairs are extensive because the transmission and drivetrain typically must be removed to access it.

If left unaddressed, excessive crankcase pressure can also lead to additional engine damage, including blown seals throughout the engine, increased oil consumption, misfires from oil contamination, and in more severe cases internal damage that may ultimately require engine replacement.

Routine oil changes using the correct specification oil, along with periodic inspection and cleaning of the PCV system and related passages, can help prevent this issue. Addressing a small restriction early can save significant time, cost, and labor—because what starts as a minor clog can quickly turn into a major repair.

Would you please take 30 seconds today to let Congress know how important it is that the independent auto repair industry be able to continue to service and repair vehicles? We need access to critical information needed to repair and maintain modern vehicles, and we need to ensure the continued ability for vehicle owners and repair shops to use the parts that they choose. We need as many people as possible to tell Congress!

visit https://www.repairact.com/ and click advocate today.

This reserves your right to have your vehicle repaired at the facility of your choice, rather than being forced by the automakers to tell you where you have to take it.

Long story short, this threatens my livelihood and the livelihood of every independent automotive repair facility.
