Across the country, more and more farms are disappearing. As families age out, land is divided, costs rise, and development creeps into what was once rolling fields and pastures; it becomes harder and harder to be a farmer.
Although they are fewer, there are still families that are committed not only to farming, but also to taking care of the soil and water they have been given to tend.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have had the chance to celebrate two farms in our community that have been committed to conservation and the use of the latest methods to correctly care for their land.
Lovelea Farms was named the Davidson County Soil and Water Conservation Farm Family for 2026. “For 75 years, dairy farming has been central to their work, growing into a thriving operation that now supports nearly 1,700 head of cattle and spans over 2,600 acres of carefully managed land.” See more here: https://www.co.davidson.nc.us/1133/2026-Conservation-Farm-Family
Weatherman Farms was named the Davie County Soil and Water Conservation Farm Family for 2026. They have also been named a finalist in the state competition, with the chance to be named the NC Conservation Farm Family for 2026.
