Earlier this year, the Lewis and Kinsley Fire Departments were notified of a grant opportunity through K-State Research and Extension – 21 Central District by Trisha Greene. The grant, sponsored by Nationwide Insurance, provided an opportunity for departments to receive a grain entrapment rescue tube to enhance emergency response capabilities for agricultural incidents.

In May, the Lewis Fire Department was selected as a grant recipient following its nomination by ProValue Insurance. The award included a grain entrapment rescue tube as well as specialized training provided by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS).

NECAS instructors traveled to Edwards County to conduct hands-on training covering the proper deployment and safe operation of the grain entrapment rescue equipment. Firefighters from the Lewis, Kinsley, Offerle, Belpre, and Trousdale Fire Departments as well as Edwards County EMS and Edwards County Sheriff's Office participated in the training.

The Lewis Fire Department would like to thank the K-State Research and Extension – 21 Central District, Trisha Greene, Nationwide Insurance, ProValue Insurance, The National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, and Alliance Ag and Grain LLC for their support and commitment in improving our rural emergency response.
