For our employee spotlight of September, please join us in celebrating our Associate Principal, Andrew VonFeldt.

Andrew has been a dedicated employee at Avant Acoustics for fourteen years. His favorite aspects of his role are the variety of projects, the unique challenges, and the new opportunities that projects provide. Andrew was quoted “There is seldom a dull day”.
Some of his favorite moments include visiting completed projects and hearing the results of his (and his teams’) efforts. He also enjoys seeing the end users experience the space and rave about its sound.

Outside the office, he’s an avid reader and hiker. Additionally, Andrew loves to experiment with landscape photography and play various instruments.

Liberty Public Schools’ (LPS) new high tech Board Room and Podcast Studio are fully operational in the renovated District Administration Center. Avant worked with Hollis & Miller Architects to provide audio-visual (AV) design, construction administration, and commissioning services, as well as acoustical consultation to make sure the room was to their sound expectations. System integration was completed by Progressive Electronics Inc, working with Citadel Electric Group, Inc. and Newkirk Novak Construction Partners. LPS school district continues to be at the forefront of AV technology in education, and Avant is glad to have been a part of another great project with the district and our partners at Hollis + Miller Architects.

Avant provided acoustical consultation services for Reed Middle School in Springfield, Missouri. Our areas of focus included the Multipurpose Auditorium, the Commons, and several music classrooms. Additionally, we provided AV system design for the Multipurpose Auditorium. The school’s auditorium was designed to be a flexible space with retractable seating, allowing it to function like a traditional auditorium or with a more flexible flat floor layout. One unique aspect of this space was the faceted wall design that creates both architectural interest and acoustical diffusion. We are thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with such a dedicated and well-curated project team.

Avant Acoustics is thrilled to announce that Andrew VonFeldt has been promoted to Associate Principal.

Andrew joined our team as an intern later transitioning to a full-time team member. He has more than fifteen years of acoustics design and audio-video (AV) design & integration experience.

Andrew has served as a Senior Consultant having worked on the following significant projects: UMKC Grant Hall Renovation, KSU Tracz Family Marching Band Hall, Mill Valley High School Auditorium, Blue Springs Aquatic Center, CLT Airport Concourse A Expansion Phase 2 , and Bass Pro Shops Wonders of Wildlife Gallery Theater.

He will continue his responsibilities as a consultant as well as actively participating in the continued growth of the company.

Bob Ledo, Ben Bridgewater, and Andrew VonFeldt had the pleasure of attending the Acoustical Society of America spring meeting in Philadelphia last week.

While attending the meeting, our Senior Principal Bob Ledo gave a presentation at the Memorial Session Honoring Robert Coffeen on Monday afternoon. Alongside Bob our Partner-Vice President Ben Bridgewater was one of the co-chairs for the session.

Bob’s presentation was “A retrospective of Bob Coffeen’s professional consulting career from the perspective of two of his longtime associates” – Ed Charland (the second longtime associate now retired) helped coauthor the presentation. The session was a tribute to Avant Acoustics’ founder and the educator who helped jumpstart the careers of many of our consultants’ and consultants across a myriad of other firms’ journey into acoustics.

Ben and Andrew also attended sessions on Sustainability in Architectural and Building Acoustics, New Challenges in Stage Acoustics Design, Acoustics in Public Accommodations Spaces, and Interesting Measurement Techniques and Results.

The semester may be coming to a close but, learning is endless. Last week our senior consultant Andrew VonFeldt, PE gave a presentation with ECC at the Kansas Independent Colleges Association Business Affairs and Operations Conference in Newton, KS. The presentation was titled "Reimagining Facilities: Adapting Spaces for Modern AV Integration.” Special thank you to all who attended the presentation and ECC for asking us to co-present with them.

Our Senior Consultant, Andrew VonFeldt lectured at a KU Architecture class. This course tasks students to design a performing arts building that includes a black box theater and a recital hall. Andrew’s lecture focused on acoustic design requirements for such spaces. The acoustic component of this course provides architecture students with an opportunity to earn part of an acoustics certificate while pursuing their degree. The professor, Brian Gross, 10 architecture students, and Andrew toured the Black Box Theater at the Goppert Performing Arts Center at Avila University and the Swarthout Recital Hall at the The University of Kansas. The most recent renovation of Swarthout Recital Hall was designed by Avant’s founder, Bob Coffeen, while he was still teaching at KU. It's always a pleasure to discuss this space that’s a piece of our founders' legacy. Andrew is looking forward to returning to the class in the spring to offer feedback on the students' designs.

This past week, Avant Acoustics performed final system commissioning and training at Bellevue West High School’s new performing arts building addition in Bellevue, NE.

Avant provided full AV system design services and recommendations for room acoustics in the auditorium, theater, lobby, and supporting spaces. The auditorium was designed to support a wide range of educational and performance needs for the school’s active music and performing arts programs.

Bellevue West’s Choir, Band, and Theater teachers (pictured here with our Senior Principal Bob Ledo) were happy to see the system go online and receive hands-on training on their new mixing console and custom control interfaces.

Andrew VonFeldt, PE was project manager for Avant, with support from Bob Ledo and David Wetzel. Avant was glad to have worked with Ralph Gladbach from GP Architecture and systems integrator Bizco Technologies on this project.
