⚠️ Washington state has fined a Yakima County roofing contractor $48,803 following a worker’s fatal fall through an unguarded skylight.

The worker fell more than 25 feet onto the concrete floor inside a fruit-packing warehouse in Wapato. Investigators reported that nothing guarded the skylight, the company had not identified skylights as fall hazards, and workers had not received adequate training about the risk. The contractor has appealed the citation and penalty.

Skylights can look solid from a distance, but they may not support a worker’s weight. Employers must identify them during jobsite planning and protect workers with appropriate covers, guardrails, personal fall-arrest systems, or other compliant measures.

We are sharing this story for educational purposes and as a reminder that proper planning, training, and fall protection must begin before anyone steps onto a roof.
