Generator Oil Consumption and Maintenance

All generators consume some oil during operation. Based on our experience with Generac generators, you can expect oil consumption of approximately ½ to ¾ of a quart during every 24 hours of continuous operation. For this reason, we recommend checking the oil level every 12 hours during extended power outages and having a quality synthetic oil on hand for top-offs.

1. Checking and Adding Oil:

2. Turn the breaker on the generator off.

3. Switch the generator off and allow a few minutes for the oil to settle.

4. Check the dipstick to confirm the oil level.

5. Add oil slowly, a little at a time, until the dipstick shows the correct level.

6. Return the generator switch to the Auto position.

7. Once the engine is running steadily, turn the generator breaker back on.

⚠️ Important: Never overfill the crankcase. Filling oil above the “Full” mark on the dipstick can reduce lubrication effectiveness, clog the air filter, and potentially cause the generator to shut down.
