A 60-second garage door safety check for families

1. Reverse test: lay a 2x4 flat under the door and close it. The door should reverse as soon as it touches the board.
2. Photo-eye test: while the door is closing, pass something through the sensor beam. The door should stop and go back up.
3. Look, don't touch: frayed cables or a gap in the spring mean it's time to call a pro. Springs and cables are under high tension.
