What's the difference between a nominal filter rating and an absolute filter rating? Quite a lot—and understanding the difference can help you select the right filtration for your hydraulic system. ⬇️
A filter element's **nominal micron rating** describes its approximate ability to capture particles of a specified size. A 5-micron or 10-micron nominal rating indicates that the element meets a defined minimum efficiency for particles in that size range, but it does not necessarily indicate high-efficiency filtration.
An **absolute filter rating** provides a more specific indication of the largest particle size a filter is designed to control at a defined efficiency. Filter performance can also be evaluated using a **Beta ratio**, which measures particle removal efficiency at a specified micron size.
Why does the difference matter?
Hydraulic system contamination can contribute to component wear, reduced performance, and premature equipment failure. Understanding micron ratings, Beta ratios, and filtration efficiency helps equipment owners choose filter elements based on actual contamination-control requirements—not micron rating or price alone.
