A Generator’s dBA Number Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Two generators can display the same dBA rating and still produce very different sound levels at the source.

Why? Testing distance matters.

A generator measured at 70 dBA from 23 feet cannot be directly compared with one measured at 70 dBA from 3 feet. Electrical load, measurement location, engine speed, airflow, exhaust, mounting, and nearby reflective surfaces can also affect the result.

When comparing generator noise specifications, ask:

✔ At what distance was the measurement taken?
✔ Was the generator operating at no load, partial load, or full load?
✔ Which side of the generator was measured?
✔ Was testing conducted indoors or outdoors?
✔ Was the generator installed in a vehicle or tested by itself?

A published number is useful only when the testing conditions are understood.

Wet Stacking Is a Warning Sign

A diesel generator that regularly operates under very light load may never reach the temperature and pressure needed for complete combustion.

Over time, unburned fuel and soot can collect in the exhaust system. This condition is known as wet stacking.

Possible warning signs include:
