to that one time we had a customer who needed studs in a hurry, so they had their friend fly in a small plane to our local airport to pick them up. Not something that you get to see every day!

This slo-mo video we shot in the shop last week is a perfect example of the stud welding process in action💥

You can see the stud lift, the creation of the arc, the concentration of heat melting the end of the stud and base material, and the stud plunging into that molten material. Though this video is over 18 seconds long, the entire stud welding process occurs in just under a second.

Pretty cool, isn't it?

Progress is coming along nicely on this new building in Lebanon. Our jobsite crew shot the studs for it toward the end of 2025.

Rusty studs are a big no-no when stud welding❌

According to AWS D1.1 Clause 7.4.1, "At the time of welding, the studs shall be free from rust, rust pits, scale, oil, moisture, or other deleterious matter that would adversely affect the welding operation."

Always store your studs in a dry space away from any moisture!

One of the more common uses for CD studs and smaller-diameter arc studs is in the restaurant and medical equipment industries.

Stud welding is commonly used within these industries to secure items to equipment, counters, tabletops and other surfaces. It eliminates the need for holes in the base material, preventing any bacteria from potentially harboring in cracks and crevices. This impenetrable attachment of the welded studs maintains a sterile space.

Pictured below is our jobsite division Operations Manager, Jason. Some time ago, he had the opportunity to install small threaded arc studs on a hospital's equipment sterilizer.

Weld Pins vs Cupped Head Pins... What's the difference?

Weld pins are installed to the base material first. Insulation is pushed onto the pins, and then a washer is used to secure the insulation in place. Some users may bend the remaining end of the pin over or cut it off, depending on the desired finish.

Cupped head pins are installed through the insulation. They can come insulated with a paper washer if the user is installing through foil backed insulation. Cupped head pins do not require a washer, as the head of the pin acts in its place.

Both of these can be installed with our lightweight, compact ACE P-100 capacitor discharge pin welder.
