I’ve got these three 9098 mic pre / eq’s on the bench for recap and reswitch. These are in great physical condition from the collection of John Keane (REM, Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic, etc…). John closed his studio this past fall. These are available for sale and I will provide a 90 day warranty. DM me if interested.

Today will be a somber Thanksgiving for me. This morning I learned that my friend and associate, since 1988, has passed. Mark Grell helped me with my first studio furniture build and made furniture, diffusers, trim, and most everything associated with wood for the studios I have built over the last three decades. All my crazy ideas and designs came to life because of him and his crew of devoted employees. He continued to work at his company as he could while recovering from esophageal cancer and subsequent brain tumors. We had many conversations about music, operating a business, and life in general. He will be missed by many, as he was a friend to all. Prayers for his wife and family.

Why am I posting a photo of a ragged strip of tape on my studio floor?

After we sold our studios at Concentrix, we began the process of designing my new rooms here at home. David Rochester at Technical Audio Services got the call...again. (This is the third studio he's built for me.) Fortunately we had the perfect space for a composing/mixing room - plenty of square footage and a 14 1/2 foot cathedral ceiling. Since this room was going to be 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos capable (requiring a total of 12 speakers), acoustics were especially important. So how did we start?

We started with that piece of tape. David corralled the specs for the size of my workstation desk, space requirements behind it for a video monitor and wiring traces, where the equipment rack would be, etc. The location of every little thing in the room was mapped out down to the fraction of an inch - all to determine one thing...the mix position. Speakers would be mounted based on this all-important factor.

Once this was determined...down went that piece of tape. Everything in the studio was positioned in relation to it. When I'm centered on that piece of blue tape, I'm in the perfect spot to insure that everything I mix sounds great out in the world.

As they used to say at NASA, David Rochester is one steely-eyed missile man. After over three years, that piece of tape may look tattered, but I don't have the heart to remove it. It'll be there until time (and the wheels of my studio chair) erase it for good.

In my silly, philosophical moments - I imagine it as a metaphor for being centered in other things as well.

Had a rare day off in FL, so was able to have lunch with a couple of long time friends (who had never met). Cannibal Co**se guitarist and recording engineer / producer Erik Rutan, and recording engineer (Deep Purple, Carcass, many others) and great technician Keith Andrews. We talked and laughed about what we each went through to get into the recording industry. Honored to be their friend!

Here are a few photos of Rhythm Ranch Recording that we recently designed and built for Brian Henry in Alpharetta GA. It is a hybrid room with (2) large ISO rooms and an amp/Leslie room. An AMEK Media 51 console (with Rupert Neve Mic Pre’s and EQ’s), a nice assortment of mics and outboard gear, and ATC monitors complete the setup. It also has a multi camera system for live streaming and recording. It looks and sounds great! Happy to have been involved in this project!
