We get this question a lot: "How do I know if my wood is dry enough to make ?"

In this video we show some different methods for checking the moisture content of a piece of wood, and the results may surprise you!

Spoiler alert: one single piece of wood can have many different readings depending on how, where, and when you measure it.

Got woody debris too big for the compost pile? Don't toss it. Char it!

Last week we partnered with Tilth Alliance's Soil Stewards program at McAuliffe Park for a hands-on biochar training. The focus: turning oversized woody biomass (branches, brush, prunings) that usually gets tossed or left to slowly break down, into compost-ready biochar in a matter of hours.

Added to compost, biochar helps the pile mature faster, holds onto nutrients and moisture, and produces a noticeably richer finished product. The char made on site will go straight into McAuliffe Park's compost system.

Curious how a biochar kiln or workshop could upgrade your compost program? Link in bio, or DM us - we'd love to bring a training to your garden, farm, or community group.

Thank you, SendCutSend, for delighting us with your irreverent stickers, and stoking our sweet tooth.

As we've started ordering more 'blanks' to meet demand for our flat-pack kilns, not only are they arriving on a pallet, we've gone from a couple Sour Punch sticks per delivery to a WHOLE BOX of Sour Patch Kids!

One photo shows these pieces mid-production, getting ready to be part of kilns going to 3 different customers.

"Sheet" is most definitely happening.

🎉 It's time for... the party trick!

💦 Come one, come all, see what happens when you take one full pail of water and pour it on another full pail of !

🌿 Seriously though - it's a great illustration of what biochar can do to improve , and yes, you can absolutely make biochar yourself with one of our flat-pack, personal size biochar kilns.

There is still so much slash from the December storm to clean up - and yesterday we provided the kiln for a demonstration for volunteers at the ’s Rake the Twigs event to support the Old North Road Cemetery.

Think we found the most fun way to compact a huge pile of fruit tree prunings into a kiln. 100% would recommend!

A 10X temperature difference from top to bottom - that's what you see with flame cap kilns, and it's one reason they're such a great alternative to pile burns.

Soil gets warm, but not for long, as forms in layers on top to protect it.

Meanwhile, the flame cap burns off the volatiles, and re-burns particulate for low smoke and lower emissions. ❤️❤️❤️
