To the untrained eye, most antique hit-and-miss engines might just look like big lumps of cast iron and a pair of flywheels. But as many seasoned collectors know, every manufacturer had their own distinct design quirks that make them fairly distinguishable, even if the original nameplate and paint are long gone!

When you're out picking or walking the show grounds, here are just a couple things to look at:

Flywheel Design: Are the spokes straight, curved, or completely solid? How many spokes does it have? For example, the Fairbanks Eclipse could be identified by a three spoke flywheel.

Water Hopper Shapes: The shape of the cooling hopper tells big story. Is it perfectly rectangular, aggressively flared at the top, or does it have a distinct coffin shape like many Stover's engine models.

These are just a couple characteristics. Learning the design languages is half the fun of the hobby, and it's exactly what helps keep these 100-year-old machines from being lost to time.
