Gas Station Heroin’ Under Fire: Tennessee Lawmakers Push Total Kratom Ban — Do You Agree?

Tennessee lawmakers are moving forward with a bill that would ban all forms of kratom across the state, including products sold at convenience stores, v**e shops and gas stations. Supporters say the plant-based substance has been linked to overdose deaths and can interact dangerously with prescription medications, prompting the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and other officials to warn that kratom overdoses may not fully respond to Narcan.

The proposal, sometimes called “Matthew Davenport’s Law,” is sponsored by Rep. Esther Helton-Haynes of Hamilton County and has already cleared several House subcommittees. If it becomes law, simply possessing kratom would be treated as a misdemeanor, while manufacturing or selling it could bring felony charges.

Critics, including some medical professionals and chronic pain patients, argue that kratom can help people manage pain or get off harder drugs when used responsibly, and they worry a full ban will push users toward more dangerous substances. Others counter that the products are poorly regulated, easy to buy, and marketed in places where young and vulnerable people shop, making what some call “gas station heroin” too risky to leave on shelves.
