We had no idea what we were doing. This is how DAT Tools actually started.

Damian’s a brickie. I’m not. Between us we had one idea and a lot of passion to build something for our kids.

Years ago, Damian bought a cutting tool on eBay. It stuck with him. When we went looking for it again, we couldn’t find it anywhere.

It wasn’t a new idea. It had been made in Taiwan for years and used by bricklayers around the world. We never invented it and we’ve never pretended we did.

So we paid for drawings of our own and started chasing tooling quotes. Then the original turned up, along with a newer red version we didn’t know about. We tested both and went with red.

Getting it ready took hours upon hours. Rulers out, metal ones in, our branding on, heads pulled apart and readjusted. Friends and family helped. The ones we couldn’t fix went in the bin.

The first order sold out. We ordered more.

Then the quality dropped. The factory’s tooling was failing, and we’d got some of the last tools they ever made. Then the product was discontinued.

No tool to sell. Just proof bricklayers wanted it.

So we started again. That’s the DAT Brick Bolster Pro.

Bricklayers need a room like this in every state.

Last week we got invited to speak at the Bricklayer Contractors Australia breakfast in Sydney. A room full of brickies, contractors and suppliers, all there for the trade.

We shared the story. Three campaigns in Vegas, the tools we built from problems our own crews were living every day, and what it’s all taught us. Put a WeepEase™ on every table so everyone could get their hands on one.

SYDNEY, WE’RE COMING! 👊🧱

Two weeks to go and we’re seriously pumped for this trip!

We’ve got a big few days planned in Sydney, connecting with some great people across the bricklaying and masonry industry, catching up with familiar faces, making some new connections and sharing plenty along the way.

A huge part of the trip will be joining Bricklayer Contractors Australia for their Breakfast & General Meeting, where we’re really proud to be presenting “Our Tools & Our Industry.”

We will be presenting alongside the amazing Think Brick Australia and we’ll be sharing our story, the journey behind DAT Tools, some of what we’ve learnt along the way and our insights from being part of this industry both here in Australia and overseas.

And this is only one part of what we’ve got planned while we’re in Sydney... 👀

We’ve followed James Starbuck’s journey for a long time, watching him build something honest, real and raw.

Next Wednesday, Damian and I are heading into the studio to record with the legend himself for Jimmy Talks Construction. As far as we know, we’ll be the first bricklayers he’s had on the show.

We’re grateful for the invitation and genuinely looking forward to meeting him in person. Expect bricklaying, business, the trade, family, all of it. Nothing’s off the table.
