Industrial Hardfacing, Inc. Announces Major Expansion, Fourth-Generation Leadership, and Continued Investment in Rural Iowa
Lamoni, Iowa — Industrial Hardfacing, Inc. (IHI), a third-generation, family-owned manufacturing and industrial services company, today announced it is nearing completion of Phase 1 of a long-term expansion plan designed to support continued growth, innovation, and customer service across North America—while remaining firmly rooted in its commitment to rural Iowa and the surrounding region.
Shortly after celebrating 60 years in operation, Industrial Hardfacing proudly welcomed the fourth generation into the family business with Michael Millslagle joining the company. Under the leadership of President Chip Millslagle III, the company embarked on a strategic, multi-year expansion focused on capacity growth, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and digital transformation.
As part of this initiative, Industrial Hardfacing has made significant capital investments, including the acquisition of a 5-Axis Waterjet, upgrades to existing CNC machining equipment, and the deployment of new Industry 4.0 digital systems to modernize operations and strengthen long-term competitiveness.
Phase 1 Expansion Highlights
Phase 1 of the expansion is nearing completion and includes:
• Construction of a new 80' x 80' warehouse featuring drive-through bays
• Installation of a 25-ton, 40-foot overhead crane system to enhance material handling and safety
• Acquisition of additional Peterbilt semi tractors and trailers, expanding IHI’s dedicated fleet and logistics capabilities
• Upgraded renovations to the existing production facility, including new doors and windows, roof repairs, and exterior painting to extend facility life and improve operational efficiency
• Continued investment in advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure
Industrial Hardfacing is honored to have been awarded a $1 million low-interest loan in partnership with CIPCO and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), supporting long-term investment in manufacturing capacity and rural economic development.
The company was also honored to host a site visit and facility tour by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and is grateful for his strong support of Iowa manufacturing, rural development, and long-term investment in the state’s industrial workforce.
Commitment to Community & Regional Impact
Throughout all phases of expansion, Industrial Hardfacing has remained focused on strengthening the broader community and regional economy. Whenever possible, the company has intentionally selected local contractors, local suppliers, and locally sourced materials, ensuring that investment dollars create a ripple effect beyond its own operations.
This community-first approach is a core part of Industrial Hardfacing’s long-term strategy, and the company anticipates continuing this commitment for all future expansion projects, reinforcing local partnerships and supporting the businesses and trades that make rural Iowa strong.
Workforce Growth & Community Impact
Industrial Hardfacing is pleased to announce that it has already exceeded its initial hiring expectations for Phase 1 and plans to continue creating high-quality employment opportunities in rural Iowa. These roles span manufacturing, logistics, engineering, sales and technical operations, reinforcing the company’s commitment to workforce development and long-term community sustainability.
Phase 2: Looking Ahead
Phase 2 of the expansion is expected to begin in the spring, with the construction of a new company headquarters in Lamoni. In addition to expanding the company’s administrative and collaborative space, Phase 2 will allow Industrial Hardfacing to relocate offices currently housed within the production facility into the new headquarters. This transition will create approximately 6,000 square feet of additional production space, enabling further manufacturing expansion and improved workflow.
Industrial Hardfacing anticipates investing a minimum of an additional $1 million in Phase 2.
With over six decades of experience, Industrial Hardfacing continues to serve as a trusted maintenance and performance partner to some of the world’s most recognized brands in the Meat By-Products Rendering and Oilseed Industries, supporting customers throughout the United States and Canada.
“This expansion represents more than growth—it reflects our long-term commitment to our customers, our employees, and our community,” said Chip Millslagle III, President. “As a multi-generation family business, we are focused on building a stronger future while honoring the values and relationships that brought us here.”
