Since I study this, I know both sides of argument, in case that helps:

On one hand, if DOE shuts down & can't offer guidance on academic standards or demand ALL students (straight and gay *both*) are treated with dignity, this would be a problem.

However, back in our grandparents' day, DEPT OF ED didn't even EXIST because college was FREE & direct funded by tax$ like we do with 5th grade public ed; things worked well!

Not only for students (a valid concern of Liberals), but also taxpayers (a genuine and key concern of Conservatives like me): When colleges knew they didn't have an endless supply of student loan funding, these colleges lived within their means, and didn't gouge taxpayers.

Granted, I trust NO politician of EITHER party, as both Trump and Biden (and both parties) have repeatedly betrayed taxpayers, students, patients, etc, as

But strictly speaking, if the Student Loans were STOPPED (what 5th graders has need of them! Or our grandparents? Or most other nations who have better higher ed? And at less cost to taxpayers AND STUDENTS) & college direct funded, that would save everyone (except rich colleges, banks, lenders, lobbyists, etc, who oppose this).

To clarify:

Reinstating bankruptcy defense to student loans looks like the only option to force down irresponsibly excess lending aka spending by US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION for student loan originations spending, ok, and thus eliminating this pork and -- instead -- direct funding colleges (and putting them on a strict "diet") ------- and ensure we eventually put a stop to reckless lending aka spending on my taxpayer dollar, ok? If someone disagrees, I'll hear their argument, but otherwise get on board for restoration of Constitutionally-protected bankruptcy uniformity, as Art.1 Sec.8 Cl.4 clearly requires.

Hurricane Milton's eye is currently located at 26.9N latitude and 83.4W longitude, approximately 60 miles west-southwest of Sarasota, Florida (which is about 45 miles due south of Tampa), and 170 miles southwest of Orlando, Florida ¹. As of the latest update from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is moving northeast at 17 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour ¹.

At this rate, it would need to travel about 60 miles (or slightly less when considering distance as the crow flies and not based on a diagonal west-southwest location), and at 17 mph, a distance of 60 miles projects an ETA of about 3 hours 32 minutes (or slightly more since the Hurricane isn't traveling due East but rather NORTHERN), so multiply 3hr 32 min by 1.4142135 to correct for longer hypotonuse of this triangle length, and get a figure of about 4 hours 59 minutes until complete landfall and direct hit at about 12:34am EST, Thursday, 10 October 2024.

WFTS reports that "ST. PETE, Fla. — The City of St. Pete is offering free parking at a garage for those who need to elevate their vehicles ahead of Hurricane Milton.

Residents can park at the South Core parking garage located at 101 1st. Ave S on a space-available basis. The entrance will be accessible from 1st Avenue S between 1st and 2nd Streets.

The free entry will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 7th and last until it is full or 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8th.

Vehicles will need to be retrieved by noon on Saturday, October 12th."

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The City of Tampa has opened all of its parking garages for free so residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas can protect their cars ahead of Milton.

Garages will be open free of charge until at least 5 p.m. Thursday, depending on storm damage, city officials said. Those who don’t remove their cars before the garages return to normal operations will be charged the standard parking rate.

Hurricane Milton forms in the Gulf of Mexico
The city also encourages those with electric vehicles to utilize the garages, because they can be prone to fires if they become submerged. Those parking EVs in the city garages should park on the third floor or higher.

“Our goal is to help all residents, especially electric vehicle owners, avoid the dangers associated with flooding,” Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement. “Parking in the upper levels of our garages can help reduce the likelihood of water damage, and we encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”
