Lake Tohopekaliga Vegetation Harvesting Update:

Osceola County recently completed harvesting aquatic vegetation in Lake Toho just south of Neptune Road, removing about 8 acres using mechanical aquatic harvesting equipment.

With funding secured from the State of Florida, another phase will soon begin on the north side of Neptune Road, removing an additional 47 acres of aquatic vegetation. Osceola County is also continuing work on long-term management plans to protect and restore the health of Lake Tohopekaliga.

A couple of weeks ago we posted before and after pictures of our mechanical harvester on Lake Toho.
TAH removed 8 acres of floating primrose willow, cattails, Cuban bullrush, smart w**d, alligator grass, tussocks and other floating plants from the north shoreline. We used a long reach excavator with a specialized aquatic bucket, and a 70-foot aquatic w**d harvester.
The material was stacked and dewatered. 94 loads of material were hauled to an offsite area using 22-yard dump trucks.
This project removed 2,069 yards of material at a total weight of 4,230,000 pounds. When using the University of Florida data, we removed 13,766.75 lbs. of nitrogen and 552.01 lbs. of phosphorus from 8 acres on Lake Toho.
Thank you, Osceola County Board of County Commissioners, for approving this project!

The Army Corps announced new plans this week to begin aquatic plant management on Lake Okeechobee using toxic chemicals (like glyphosate) that pollute our waterways, jeopardize our health and contribute to harmful algal blooms. In addition to continuing the fight to ban this practice permanently, I'm urging them to use mechanical harvesting for this project instead!

“We owe it to our future generations to be good stewards of the environment and protect Florida’s waterways while controlling invasive plant species in Lake Okeechobee. There is no need for dangerous chemicals like diquat and glyphosate when we have safer alternatives like mechanical harvesting ...
