Significance of Stud Rails

Stud Rails have been recognized with helping to offer punching shear solutions.

What is punching shear failure?

Punching shear failure is a type of shear failure that occurs in concrete slabs, particularly around concentrated loads like columns. It's characterized by a cone-shaped crack that forms as the slab is "punched" by the load, potentially leading to a sudden collapse. This type of failure is a critical design consideration in flat slabs and other structures where concentrated loads are present. Punching Shear Failure can occur without adequate reinforcement.

Why are stud rails used?

Studs of a predetermined length and diameter, according to design specifications in compliance with IBC and UBC Structural Steel Welding Standards, are used to extend the column perimeter into the floor or foundation slab. This reduces the amount of reinforcing bar required in an area and column congestion, resulting in easier and faster installation, as well as lower cost.

📣 Hello post tension world, did you know about this new code update?! ...

ACI 320-25 has now codified stud rails as a monostrand tendon reinforcement in lieu of traditional rebar bursting steel. For some this is not new in their designs, for others they may have foregone this design as it wasn't in the code book, but now it is!

- R25.9.4.4.6b for code information
- Reduced congestion
- Concrete compaction improvements in these zones
