The final presentation of the 2024 Shlaer-Mellor Days conference included the results of the Chess Modeling Challenge tournament. Using BridgePoint, Levi Starrett built an executable model to run the tournament. This model played each of the bots against one another in an Arena-Style tournament.

The most in-depth treatment of Chess strategy was presented by Levi Starrett in 'Exploring the Future'. Levi's model recursively played hypothetical moves and counter-moves to discover the best next move. His robot can beat other robots, people and even himself!

Arguably (pun intended) the presentation that sparked the most debate during the 2024 Shlaer-Mellor Days conference was titled "Zero Duration Timer Idiom and CrossFit Cindy". Cortland Starrett claimed to identify a bug in the Shlaer-Mellor Method and proposed a fix as well as a work-around (until the fix is agreed upon). And if you are a fitness nerd, this is for you!

The final stop on the 2024 Shlaer-Mellor Days world tour was Helsinki, Finland. I remember running an xtUML model translated into C on a pre-release prototype Nokia cell phone which benchmarked better performance than my personal computer.

We took the ferry to/from Stockholm to make the visit.

We saw a basic strategy in Simple Max Advance. Now, John and Alasdar present a Pretty Smart Chess Bot that aggressively takes the opponent's pieces!

The third stop on the Shlaer-Mellor Days 2024 world tour was in Linköping, Sweden where xtUML has seen long-lasting usage in industry and research in the university environment. A dinner party was hosted at The Bishop's Arms downtown, the traditional meeting place of modelers after work!

First stop on 2024 Shlaer-Mellor Days world tour was Portsmouth, UK. The visit included golf, a half marathon, an on-site technical meeting and a fine dinner with the local xtUML modelers... mostly from BAE Systems.

The conference is set: 29 Oct 2024 1:00-5:00pm UK time.

The 2024 Chess Modeling Challenge tournament is running even as I type. 5 different chess 'bot entries are battling it out. Note that Levi has modelled the tournament runner program (in addition to the bots themselves). He will demo his "Arena Tournament Runner" at the conference.

One submission has the provocative title "Zero Duration Timer Idiom and CrossFit Cindy". What is that all about?

In addition to the chess challenge presentations there will be tooling updates, project updates, around-the-table and happy hour!
