It’s planer maintenance day at

Brother Tom caught Brother Tim rotating the carbide cutters on the planer. Tim estimates these cutters have been through at least 20,000 board feet of lumber, and only four or five had small nicks. Each square cutter has four cutting edges, so he can rotate it to a fresh one.

Tom offered some expert advice: “Don’t overtighten those.”

“That’s why I’m using a torque wrench, dumb dumb.” Fair point, Tim. 😂

The planer may be the busiest tool in Tim’s shop. After a board is sawn and kiln dried, we skip plane both sides before it goes to a customer. That light pass removes some of the rough surface and makes the grain and defects easier to see.

Our school customers especially appreciate it. Students can make better choices during board layout and spend less time waiting to remove the roughest material at their shop planer.

A jointer flattens the first face. A planer reduces thickness and, once it has a flat face to work from, can make the opposite face parallel. Skip planing gives customers a head start; it isn’t final milling.

Brother Tim handles the lumber. Brother Tom handles the unsolicited torque advice.
