Three wood blocks cut to 6¾ inches will tell you instantly whether a panel actually locked, before you screw it down.

When two board and batten panels seat properly, the distance between battens is exactly 6¾ inches. The install guide suggests making three templates at that measurement and checking the top, middle, and bottom of each panel as you set it.

Once you get the hang of it you can usually check visually, and you'll start to feel the panel bottom out and snap into place.

Connor runs our trim department, which means every corner and every window and door on your house started with him.

Six years ago the brakes intimidated him. That's the machinery that bends flat steel into those trim pieces, and it's unforgiving work. A fold that's off by a fraction shows up on somebody's wall. He learned it here, and he put the hours in.

"I put a lot of time into it. It feels good to be able to roll with the questions and not have to go ask somebody else."

Now he's the one getting asked. When a job needs a piece that isn't standard, Connor is who the team brings it to. Can it be folded that way? Will it look right? Is it even possible? He's usually the person who decides the answer is yes.

And what he'd tell a homeowner is that installing this is simpler than it looks. He's sided his own sheds with it. Block it in, secure it, don't overthink it.

You already picked your siding. Your supplier gave you a date. Then the date moved.

Here's what nobody explains when they call with the new one: it isn't two weeks. It's the difference between installing in November and installing in whatever December gives you. Revised dates have a way of becoming January projects.

So before you accept it, get a second date. It costs nothing and you're not cancelling anything.

What to have in front of you:
1. A profile you are leaning toward. Log, Board and Batten, or Lap.
2. Two or three colors you like. Comparing a short list is far easier to decide from.
3. Samples in hand. Color behaves differently in person than on a screen, seeing it against your own materials settles the question.
4. Measurements or plans. If you are building, the drawings have what we need. If you are re-siding, wall dimensions let us give you a real number instead of a range.
5. Whether you are installing it or hiring it out. Plenty of people do their own, some prefer to hire a contractor.

If you come looking for Dave in his office, there's a fair chance he isn't in it.

He's our chief operating officer, and he's probably out on the floor making sure everyone's doing alright. He tries to talk to every person here each day, even if it's only for a minute.

"It's probably the most important part of my job, to be honest."

The thing he finds most telling isn't a review. It's the people who show up. Customers driving through Colorado on their way somewhere else will take a 60 mile detour just to see the siding in person. He's met dozens of them.

Ask what he's proudest of at work and he says it's the team, and getting the right people into the right seats.

Ask what matters outside of it and there's no hesitation. It's his family, and these days that mostly means his daughter's swim meets and water polo tournaments.

He's also a longtime Nuggets fan.
