Not every vehicle accident is on the road.
Forklifts are an integral tool for supply chain, shipping, and inventory management, but just like any vehicle they must be operated well and with awareness to their surroundings, especially coworkers and bystanders.
Here are some tips to help your team remain safe when operating or working near forklifts:
• Slow Down & Sound Off: Always slow down and honk your horn at intersections, blind spots, and corners.
• Take It Slow: Bulky loads can become top heavy and the shift in weight when moving or stopping quickly can result in dangerous tipovers or dropped cargo. When in doubt, slow down.
• Use Fall Protection: For man-up forklifts, ensure you use proper fall protection to prevent falls from the lift.
• Watch Where You're Driving: If a bulky load blocks your forward vision, drive in reverse (with a clear view) or use a spotter.
If your forklift starts tipping over, you must react quickly, but how you react depends on the type of forklift.
• For standing forklifts: Simply step off the lift.
• For sitting forklifts: stay buckled, grip the steering wheel, plant your feet on the ground or sides of the forklift, and lean away from the tilt to regain balance.
• If you tip too far, keep your feet planted, lean forward, shield your head with your arms, brace for impact, and wait for the lift to come to a complete stop.
• Once the forklift stops, call for assistance, exit the forklift if possible, and report the incident.
